Pacific Division foes San Jose and Vancouver will meet for the third time in the past month, fresh off an NHL trade deadline day deal that sent Jannik Hansen to the Sharks and Nikolay Goldobin to the Canucks.
San Jose is starting to pull away atop the Pacific, while the Canucks have finally bit the bullet and accepted that it’s rebuild time.
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks are starting to pull away in a Pacific Division that has a decidely new look of the past five or six years.
While the Sharks have been perennial contenders in one of hockey’s toughest divisions, their California counterparts Los Angeles and Anaheim always seemed to be a half step better than them.

That narrative has changed as the Sharks have cemented themselves as the best team in California and one of the best teams in the Western Conference. The Pacific is definitely weaker now as the Ducks have taken some steps back as have the Kings, leaving the door open for teams like Edmonton and Calgary to get into the picture, but neither of those two have quite reached the level that the Sharks are at right now.
The swap of touted prospect Nikolay Goldobin for Jannik Hansen is a pretty clear message that this team wants to make another run at the Stanley Cup again this year.
Hansen is an established pro who can slot in on the second or third line and play some power play time as well if needed. He adds some depth to an already solid group and will get a chance to take on his former team right away.
Vancouver Canucks
On the flip side of the deal, the Canucks grabbed a solid prospect who will bring some skill and youth to a Canucks team that was desperately in need of a fresh start.
Vancouver sent out the early signal before deadline day that they were looking to shed some older guys in exchange for youth when they dealt Alex Burrows to the Ottawa Senators for 19-year-old Jonathan Dahlen, who has racked up 44 points in 45 games in the Swedish 1st Division this year.

Neither of these moves are immediate impact changes, but this will likely see the Canucks fizzle out for the remainder of the year and improve their draft position.
With guys like Goldobin (21) and Dahlen in the system now, to go along with players like Bo Horvat (21), Sven Baertschi, and Markus Granlund (both 23), the team is certainly trending towards a youth movement and are looking to life after the Sedins.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Vancouver is 8-19-3 on the road this season
- San Jose is 19-7-4 at home this season
- San Jose is 3-1-0 in the last four meetings between the two
- San Jose has won the last two meetings by a combined score of 8-2
- Road team is 21-6 in the last 27 meetings
- Canucks are 0-4 in their last 4 games
Free Vancouver Canucks vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Hockey Prediction:
Don’t expect the Canucks to wow anyone for much of the remainder of the season. With the likes of Burrows and Hansen gone, sure a youth movement is coming, but this is still very much Daniel and Henrik Sedin’s team.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: San Jose -1.5
The culture won’t change drastically until those two either retire or start moving to the passenger seat to let the kids drive the bus.
