Vancouver might be the worst team in the NHL this season and destined for the #1 overall draft pick this coming summer.
The team cannot score goals, as evidenced by their 1.86 goals per game, a mark that’s good for dead last in the league.
Detroit hasn’t been a dominating force on offense either, currently sitting in 19th overall in goals per game at 2.6 on average, and their leading point-getter is a defenseman.
Despite the lack of scoring, the team has managed to put together a 7-6-1 record to seat them in 2nd in the Atlantic Division.
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks are now a team seemingly without direction, having aging veteran players on big contracts including the recently signed, Loui Eriksson, but in desperate need of a full rebuild.
The team lost nine straight games before Tuesday’s matchup in New York, which may have been the most surprising victory that night in NY over Donald Trump’s.
The Sedins are leading the way with eight and seven points, respectively, in 14 games played.
They are no longer the Art Ross candidates they once were, but would be a great #2 option for a contending team should they move on from Vancouver, though that’s unlikely as they’ve played their entire careers with the Nucks and have a combined $14mm salary.
Vancouver hasn’t got the breakout performances from their young players like many of the other franchises that have been in their position before.
Bo Horvat is a nice two-way player who had a strong finish to last season, but has registered just seven points in 14 games.
Jake Virtanen is constantly a healthy scratch or receiving 4th line minutes when he is in the lineup, not what you want out of the 6th overall draft pick from two summers’ ago.

The bright spot on the Canucks team this season would probably be in net, as the team is getting solid goaltending from both Ryan Miller and Jacob Markstrom.
The veteran Miller is a prime trade candidate for a goaltending needy team, as his experience and .910 SV% and 2.76 may be welcomed in a place like Dallas.
Markstrom has appeared eight games this season and owns a .915 SV% nad 2.23 GAA.
Detroit Red Wings
The future looks promising for this Detroit team, with a number of talented youngsters throughout the lineup.
However, this season they’ve been led on the scoresheet by veteran defenseman, Mike Green, who has tallied 10 points in 14 games.
Green has appeared to recapture some of his old magic from his Washington days, where he recorded an over-a-point per game average for two seasons.
Part of the top young talent includes Gustav Nyquist, who has nine points in 14 games played thus far. Dylan Larkin, possibly the fastest player in the NHL, is off to a slow start with five points but has immense upside.
Likewise for Tomas Tatar, who has six points thus far after recording consecutive 20+-goal seasons the last two years.
Other young talent includes Riley Sheahan, Ryan Sproul, Xavier Ouellet, Andreas Athanasiou, Alexei Marachenko, and the recently called up, Tyler Bertuzzi.
Bertuzzi, a 2013 2nd round selection, is the former son of former Red Wing, Todd Bertuzzi, and made his NHL debut on Tuesday night after a strong junior career and one full season in the AHL.

Petr Mrazek is the goaltender of the current and future for the Wings, but has been vastly outplayed by his counterpart, Jimmy Howard, this season.
Howard has recorded a 3-2 record and registered a 1.26 GAA with a .958 SV% on the year, whereas Mrazek has a 4-4-1 record with a 3.18 GAA and .904 SV%.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Vancouver ranks dead last in goals per game with 1.86 on the year

- The Red Wings are 4-4-0 at home
Free Vancouver Canucks vs Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction
Vancouver simply hasn’t been good this season, especially on the road where they are 1-5-1 and have scored just 15 goals in those away games.
Vanek is out for the Red Wings, who had been off to a great start to the year, but they should have enough scoring and depth to hold off the lowly Canucks.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Detroit -1.5
I’ll short Vancouver on the road most times this season, taking the built-in odds of the empty net goal bonus into th epuck-line spead of -1.5. Based on the play of Jimmy Howard thus far, if he starts I like the pick even more than with Mrazek in net.
