There were high hopes for the Colorado taking a step in the right direction this season, and while they’re getting better production for their young stars, they currently sit at the bottom of the Central Division at a 9-10-0 record.
The same can’t be said for the Vancouver Canucks team that the Avs will face, as the Canucks were widely projected to finish in the basement of the league, and they aren’t far from it.
The Canucks currently have the same point total as the Avalanche at 18 apiece, with Colorado having one more game at hand.
Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks window has seemingly closed in the Sedin-era, with the aging veteran stars no longer producing at the clip that earned each an Art Ross trophy.
The Sedins are lifelong Canucks and while it’s highly unlikely they will be dealt, both due to salary and stature within the city, it may be for the best.

One needs to look no further than current Av, Jerome Iginla, to see that there can be life after spending an entire career (essentially) with one team.
The best building block the Canucks have to format their future around is Bo Horvat, who continues to take a step in his development in his age-21 year.
He is already a solid second line center, which is probably where his ceiling lays, but is pacing the Canucks with seven goals and 13 points (tied with Daniel Sedin). Horvat has been on a tear as of late, with five points in his past five games.
High price off-season signee, Loui Eriksson, has finally started to put up the numbers in the past seven games, where he’s scored four goals in that span after beginning his Canucks’ career with a 13-game goalless streak.
The Canucks goaltending has been mediocre at best so far, with Ryan Miller leading the way with a 2.73 GAA and a .908 SV% in his 10 games played. He shares the load with Jacob Markstrom, who owns a 2.82 and .897 SV% in 11 appearances.
Colorado Avalanche
Nathan Mackinnon appears to be rejuvenated by the departure of former coach, Patrick Roy, and now playing under the tutelage of Jason Bednar.
Mackinnon leads the Avs in scoring with 15 points in 19 games, and has already amassed a whopping 67 SOGs. It’s clear that Bednar trusts Mackinnon, as he’s averaging the most time on ice amongst the forward group at 20:07 by nearly two full minutes.
Matt Duchene is also having a solid season under Bednar, with the team-lead in goals with seven and 12 total points while playing in just 15 games.
Duchene paced the Avalanche last year in scoring, with 30 goals and 59 points in 76 games played, as subsequently represented Team Canada at the World Cup this summer due to his efforts.
There is a strong young nucleus in Colorado of talent, with Mackinnon and Duchene being joined by the likes of Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen, Mikhail Grigorenko, and on the back-end, Tyson Barrie and Nikita Zadorov.

Seymon Varlamov handles the bulk of the work for Colorado in the crease, appearing in 14 games this season and registering a .904 SV% and 3.08 GAA.
It is a strong possibility that this will be Varlamov’s last season in an Avs uniform, as he could be exposed and claimed in the expansion draft in the coming summer, which would see the team shed his $5.9-million salary and hand over the reins to Calvin Pickard.
Pickard has posted a .931 SV% and 2.07 GAA in his six appearances this season, and had long been the goaltender-in-waiting in Denver.

Free Vancouver Canucks vs. Colorado Avalanche NHL Hockey Prediction
Vancouver has finally picked up their scoring pace, although it still ranks amongst the worst in the league at just 2.2 on average. However, they’ve scored at least three goals in five of their last seven games.
It could continue in this game, as the Avalanche are allowing an average of 2.9 against per game and have one of the league’s worst PK percentage at 78.2% efficiency.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
Colorado is almost identical to Vancouver, only averaging 2.2 goals per game as well but also having scored at least three goals in five of their last seven games. Neither team seems to be able to keep the puck out of their own net, so I’ll take the over.
