The battle of two respective 6th place teams in their divisions will take place on this Sunday afternoon, in a game that should see a number of empty seats.
Vancouver and Buffalo are both in the midst of terrible seasons, but are certainly at different development arcs in their team make-up.
Vancouver Canucks
The passing of the torch is happening in Vancouver right in front of our eyes this season, with Henrik Sedin and Bo Horvat sharing the team lead in points with 34 apiece.
Horvat, the former 9th overall pick acquired for Cory Schneider, has long been thought of as the future Canucks’ captain, and has certainly developed his offensive side of the game to compliment his two-way prowess.

While he may not be a sure-fire first line center, it appears Horvat has developed a solid rapport with linemate, Sven Baertschi, in what could be the foundation on the second line in years to come.
The blueline is flooded with NHL caliber defenseman, and it may be a prudent move to deal a couple away at the deadline for some offensive help, especially considering the expansion draft is looming.
Chris Tanev is a solid two-way defender who could net a nice return, as are Alexander Edler and Ben Hutton.
The goaltending in Vancouver could also net a mediocre return, with veteran Ryan Miller having big game experience and posting decent numbers on the year.
Miller owns a 2.56 GAA and a .918 SV% on the year with 15 wins.
Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo coach, Dan Bylsma, may be on the hot-seat with him team currently sitting in 6th place overall, but loaded with young offensive talent.
The Pegulas may be getting impatient with the lack of success the Sabres have experienced, though missing Jack Eichel for the first six weeks certainly hurts.
Evander Kane has been rumored to be on the block, with Vancouver as one of the potential landing spots. Kane has had quiet the off-season antics the past few years and may be wearing thin in Buffalo.
Zemgus Girgensons has fallen off since an All-Star appearance season, where the former 1st round pick gathered 30 points in 61 games. He is another name that could be on the move at the deadline.

Zach Bogosian has struggled on the back-end this year and could be a name in play, but the value might not be there considering his five total points and minus-15 rating this year.
Goalie Robin Lehner appears to have been worth dealing a high draft pick for, solidifying himself as the #1 guy in Buffalo. Lehner owns a .923 SV% and a 2.57 GAA on the year across 36 games played.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Vancouver rank 27th in goals per game this year at 2.3
- Vancouver hasn’t scored more than three goals since January 12th
- Vancouver is 7-16-3 on the road this year
- Buffalo is 2-3 in February
- Buffalo is 13-9-4 at home
- Buffalo has a minus-21 goal differential on the season
Free Vancouver Canucks vs Buffalo Sabres NHL Hockey Prediction:
These two teams have struggled to score goals all season, seeing as the Sabres sit 24th in goals per game and the Canucks in 27th.
It’s strange in Buffalo’s case, considering they have a nice bevy of offensive talent up front and rank 2nd overall on powerplay percentage.

The Canucks have been terrible on the road, but I expect Miller to produce a big game wanting to shut down his former team on the road.
