First overall selection just a year ago, Connor McDavid, has quickly turned into one of the game’s biggest stars and will face off against fellow #1 pick from this summer and budding Leafs’ star (pun intended), Auston Matthews.
The two young lineups feature a ton of offensive firepower and flash, it will be a fun one to watch.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto ranks second in the league in goals per game, scoring an average of 3.1 per contest.
The new-look Maple Leafs have been transformed into a fun team to watch, with young stars sprinkled throughout the lineup that finally gives Leafs’ fans something to look forward to after years of misery.
The main factor is Auston Matthews, the #1 pick from the summer who has produced some highlight reel goals in his strong rookie season to date, where he’s recorded nine goals and 17 points across 21 games.

One of the other exciting young guns, Mitch Marner, has 18 points of his owns and looks every bit of developing into the star player that the Leafs projected when selecting him 4th overall in 2015 after an illustrious junior career.
The high Leafs picks appear to be paying dividends, as joining Marner and Matthews in those ranks is William Nylander (15 points), as well as the older top picks of Morgan Reilly, Nazem Kadri, and James van Riemsdyk.
Goaltender Frederik seems to have now settled into the new system and life in Toronto. On the season, he owns a .911 SV% and 2.97 GAA after a tough start to the year that had fans questioning whether he was the answer in net.
As Toronto continues to round out as a team, the defense in front of Andersen should get stronger and provide him some more support.
Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid has leads the NHL in scoring with 29 points in 23 games, three points ahead of the next-in-line. McDavid possesses special talent that hasn’t been seen in a long time, and he is already considered amongst the best in the league at just 19 years old.
He’s averaging 21:09 TOI and has a plus-7 rating, taking his game to the next level while now sporting the “C.”
The Edmonton lineup, not dissimilar from Toronto’s, is littering with former top picks and tremendous young talent. Leon Draisaitl is second in scoring for the Oilers, seeing the former 3rd overall pick net 17 points.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jesse Puljujarvi, Adam Larsson, Darnell Nurse and Benoit Pouliot are all former top-10 picks who occupy the Oilers’ roster.
The defense now has a nice base with Adam Larsson, Kris Russell, Oscar Klefbom and Darnell Nurse providing young talent that can grow along with their excellent forward group.

Russell is the grizzled veteran of the group at 29-years of age, and provides a steady defensive, shot-blocking type of game.
Cam Talbot has been a revelation this season, owning a .921 SV% and 2.45 GAA for an Edmonton team that’d been searching for a goaltender for a decade until he was acquired. Talbot boasts an 11-8-2 record on the year, appearing in a large majority of games at 21.
Jonas Gustavsson backs-up Talbot, and may be given the nod against his former team.
Gustavsson owns a .898 SV% and 2.34 GAA in his limited work across just three appearances this year.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- McDavid leads the NHL with 29 points.
- Both of these two teams sit amongst the top-7 in total scoring, averaging a combined 6.0 goals per game.
Free Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey Prediction
This should be a shootout in Edmonton, seeing two of the top offensives teams this season face one another.
McDavid and Matthews will long be compared, as each were selected first overall to help transform their respective franchises back to their former glory.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
I’m going back to the well on this one, as earlier this season I picked a shootout in the first game of the year between these two clubs. Looking at the scoring figures, and factoring in Toronto’s poor GAA (3.2 per game allowed), I like the over.
