The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the thick of a playoff race for the final playoff seed in the East, sitting one point ahead of the New York Islanders with one game at hand as well.
The Blue Jackets have been one of the NHL’s most surprising teams this year. They’re tied with Chicago for the most wins, at 47, and the Washington Capitals with the most points, with 100 each.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs have been carried by their young star forwards this season, helping them to a 6th overall goals per game ranking while averaging 3.0. This is also on the back of the league’s best powerplay, flying along at a 23.6% efficiency rate.
Unfortunately, the goals against hasn’t had the same fortune as it currently ranks at 21st overall allowing an average on the year. This, however, is to be expected with growing pains of a young team and should prove to be a good learning lesson come time when Toronto is expected to legitimately contend.

Auston Matthews leads the forwards with 32 goals and 56 points in his 70-game rookie season so far. Matthews sits just one goal behind Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine for the rookie lead, though Laine has tallied 33 in just 64 games.
Mitch Marner is the other Leafs’ rookie who should hear his name in the mix for the Calder trophy. Marner has 55 points in 65 games played, looking like he belongs in the talent conversation with fellow small-statured scorer, Johnny Gaudreau.
Frederik Andersen has been solid for the most part this year, adjusting to the starting role in Toronto to the tune of a .918 SV% and a 2.67 SV%.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus has had the best season in franchise history, already tallying 100 points and ranking amongst the top-5 in both goals per game and goals against. Currently, the Jackets rank 4th in goals per game at 3.2, and 2nd in goals against at 2.3.
After a down year a season ago from captain Nick Foligno, he’s rebounded to score 24 goals and tack on another 24 assists while leading his club into a tie with Washington in the Metro with 100 points.

Cam Atkinson has netted 33 goals, tied for 4th in the league, and leads the team with 60 points. Alex Wennberg is the other Blue Jacket with 50+ points, at 54, in what is his rookie year as well.
Sergei Bobrovsky is a major reason why the team has 100 points, and he’s emerged as frontrunner for the Vezina with 12 games left. He owns a 2.04 GAA, .931 SV% and 39 wins, all leading the league amongst starting goalies.
