Two former Central Division rivals drop the puck in Hockey Town as the St. Louis Blues look to extend their playoff push against the struggling Red Wings.
St. Louis Blues
Don’t look now, but the St. Louis Blues have won four in a row and are only a few points behind the Edmonton Oilers for 5th in the West.
It’s amazing what a coaching change can do for a team, and the Blues are finding that out first hand after parting ways with Ken Hitchcock two weeks ago.

The Blues have a chance to win their fifth in a row, something they haven’t done all season. They’re in great position to do just that against a Detroit team that has the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
While the offense has led the charge this season, it’s been the defense that’s looked incredible as of late. Jake Allen and Carter Hutton have allowed a combined three goals over their last four games, including two shutouts.
St. Louis has outscored its last four opponents 14-3 and now look very much alive in the Western Conference playoff picture.
Detroit Red Wings
It doesn’t look right seeing the Red Wings struggling so badly, but that’s where they are right now. With just 54 points, Detroit is seven points out of a playoff spot in the East.
It’s looking more and more likely that the Red Wings will finally see their postseason record end at 25 consecutive years.
The Wings have lost four in a row and nine of their last 11 overall. With Jimmy Howard out with an injury, the goaltending duo of Petr Mrazek and Jared Coreau has been downright awful.
Both netminders have GAA above the 3.00 mark, and their save percentages are just as bad.

The Red Wings’ defense has allowed at least four goals in six of their last nine games, and their offense hasn’t been able to bail them out.
Detroit’s offense is averaging just 2.40 goals per game (26th in the NHL) and their power play unit ranks dead last at only 12 percent.
The team will most likely be a seller at the trade deadline, all but putting a nail in the coffin of their postseason chances.
