The St. Louis Blues missed the playoffs by a single point in 2017/18 but they’ve regressed immensely this season, currently sitting at 2nd to last in the Western Conference.
The Blues have dropped 4 of their last 5 but will try to get things back on track when they play the first of a 3-game road trip at Detroit on Wednesday.
The Red Wings are mired in a 3 game losing streak and find themselves slight +101 home underdogs in this contest. Which side is the right play in this proverbial coin toss?
St. Louis Blues
It’s hard to expect much out of the Blues offense lately as they’ve been shut out or held to a single goal in 4 of their last 7 games. Of their last 14 games, St. Louis has played just 4 of them on the road.
Take away a 4-1 win in Vegas and the Blues have scored just a single goal in the other three road contests. Vladimir Tarasenko and Ryan O’Reilly have netted a combined 3 goals the last two games (part of 10 that the Blues have scored) but both those contests were at home.

The Blues road woes may be a bit over-exaggerated as they have gone 6-2 away from St. Louis this season. The Blues will also have had 3 nights off before Wednesday’s contest which has to be to their advantage considering Detroit played on Monday.
What the Blues will need to have to pull off the win is more consistency from Jake Allen. The starting goaltender has allowed 3+ goals in five of his last 8 starts and his .896 save percentage is 38th in the league.
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit has dropped 3 in a row including two straight at home but they are playing much better than that in the big picture. The Red Wings won 7 of 9 to start November and have been seeing some solid offense with 3+ goals in 9 of 11 games this month.
Tonight will be the third straight game at Little Caesars arena for the Red Wings which should offset some of the travel and fatigue concerns of playing on Monday and again on Wednesday.
Detroit should be able to score on St. Louis’ Allen, but they just don’t give themselves enough opportunities ranking 27th in the league in SOG. Perhaps RW Anthony Mantha can change that as he has 3 goals and 2 assists the last two games.

The Detroit offense might not have to be that great Wednesday if G Jimmy Howard can keep up his recent stellar play. Howard has gone 6-1-1 in his last 8 decisions and has 35+ saves in 5 of them.
The Red Wings defense is 29th in the league in shots against so Howard will have to be solid yet again vs. a rested St. Louis squad.
NHL Betting Trends:

- Blues are 1-6 their last 7 vs. a team with a losing record
- Red Wings are 3-13 their last 16 vs. Western Conference
- Red Wings are 1-4 their last 5 on one days rest
- Blues are 6-1 the last 7 in Detroit
- Road team is 11-2 the last 13 meetings
Free St. Louis Blues vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Prediction:
You have to like the home ice advantage that Detroit boasts tonight but St. Louis has a huge edge in rest having had 3 nights off. The Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard has played better in-goal than his counterpart but he faces so many shots that even a slumping offense like St. Louis’ can sneak a couple by based just on volume.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: St. Louis -121
Allen can be solid in net with a refreshed defense in front of him that ranks 11th in SOG against. The Blues have enough offensive firepower to get to Howard who gave up 3 goals on 19 shots Monday.
