It’s been a great start to the season for the Blues, their last under coach Ken Hitchcock before the regime shifts over to the reigns of Associate Head Coach, Mike Yeo.
So far it appears that this Blues team wants to winner a banner for Hitch, who is widely regarded as one of the game’s great coaches.
On the other bench, new Flames’ coach, Glen Gulutzen, is still working out the kinks after a sloppy training camp where they missed some key players in Mikael Backlund and Johnny Gaudreau.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues have long been considered a Stanley Cup contender, but have continuously disappointed in the post-season depsite their deep lineup.
The most common theme was the rotation in net, as they’d tried to run with both Ryan Miller and Brian Elliot in separate runs, but have handed the full time job over to Jake Allen this season.
The top-9 forwards are as deep as they come, with three lines that all have fiirepower and a solid two-way game, even after seeing former captain, David Backes, part ways as a free agent this summer.
They’ve drafted and developed well, having Jaden Schwartz, Robby Fabbri, Patrik Berglund, Ty Rattie, and of course, Vladamir Tarasenko, lead the charge.

Jake Allen was seemingly the goalie of the future in-waiting forever, but has finally been given the full time job with the departure of Brian Elliot, whom he’d regularly split time with.
Allen has responded to the vote of confidence early on, with a 1.99 GAA and .909 SV% on the year to go along with a 2-1-1 record.
Kevin Shattenkirk has long been rumored to be on his way out of St. Louis, yet he still remains and is a key piece on their blueline.
Joining him are fellow Olympians, Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester, along with the young Colton Parayako, a massive 3rd round defender who broke out in a big way last season as a rookie.
Calgary Flames
Speaking of drafting and development, look no further than Calgary to see legitimate star players who were selected and developed within their own program.
Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Sam Bennett, Mikael Backlund, Mark Giordano, TJ Brodie and recent selection, Matthew Tzachuk, all are either star players or on their way to being one, all having only on professional franchise to their name in Calgary.
Gaudreau was a 4th round, triple-digit pick selection, who has paid enormous dividends for the Calgary franchise who look past his small stature.
The 5’8, 155 lb. forward finished tied for 6th in scoring last season with 78 points in his 79 games played. He pairs with Sean Monahan, the important pivot who scored 31 goals and tallied 63 points of his own.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again- the duo appears to be a version of Toews and Kane in the making.

Brian Elliot has been brought in to solidify the crease, which has been an issue for the Flames ever since the incumbent Mikka Kiprusoff retired.
Elliot currently has a .839 SV% and 4.72 GAA to start his Flames career, so he’ll be looking to turn his season around here against a Blues team that ranks 22nd in goals per game so far this year at 2.6.
The Calgary back-end is solid, with Mark Giordano leading the charge along with Dougie Hamilton, TJ Brodie and Jyrki Jokipakka rounding out the top-4.
The team is well-positioned to both start contending in the near-term, but it also set up for the long haul.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- St. Louis took both games head-to-head last season, each by a one goal margin.
- Calgary ranks 17th overall in goals-per-game at 2.6, where as St. Lous is 22nd at 2.8.
Free St. Louis Blues vs Calgary Flames NHL Hockey Prediction
The Blues have been great to start the year and I don’t see any reason why that can’t continue despite being on the road at the Sattledome.
While Calgary’s defense should be solid and Elliot an improvement from the past seasons, it hasn’t all come together yet thus far and they’re facing a tough challenge from St. Louis.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: St. Louis Moneyline
Both teams actually are very similar, however the Blues are a year or two further along the in their development as a group overall.
Calgary is still adjusting to the new systems under new coach, Glen Gulutzen, especially since they received impact forwards in Johnny Gaudreau and Mikael Backlund late into camp.
