This has been one of the storied rivalries over the recent past, with stars Claude Giroux and Sidney Crosby holding a real grudge for one another.
Amongst the two squads faced one another in the Winter Classic, the heated playoff series in 2011-12 season and all of the matchups, there has been some bad blood.
It was even rumored that Claude Giroux was left off of the 2014 Olympic team because Crosby didn’t want him in the room, which hasn’t been confirmed but it makes one wonder considering at the time, Giroux had recorded the most points of any player of the three previous seasons entering the Games.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Crosby has now returned to the ice after suffering a concussion that kept him out of the lineup for the first handful of games this season.
The Penguins are undefeated in the two games with Cros in the lineup, and for his part the game’s biggest superstar has recorded three points in those two games.
Evgeni leads the team with three goals, five assists and eight points, and has clicked well with linemates Phil Kessel and Chris Kunitz, where Kessel now sits in 2nd on the team in points with seven.
The reigning Stanley Cup champions were able to retain most of their roster from a season ago, and appear poised to make another post-season run this year, as they currently lead the Metro Division with a 5-2-1 record.

Matt Murray was a revelation for Pittsburgh in the playoffs a season ago, taking over for Marc-Andre Fleury and not relinquishing back the starting job.
He was widely considered to be Pittsburgh goalie of the future and rumors began to swirl about a Fleury trade being essentially a lock this season, considering the expansion draft this summer.
The young netminder suffered a hand injury in the World Cup of Hockey and has yet to dress for a game this season and it will be interested to see was the Pens do once he returns, as Fleury has recorded a respectable .910 SV% and 2.97 GAA, starting in every game with Murray out.
Philadelphia Flyers
Claude Giroux once again leads a Philadelphia team with a lot of firepower throughout the lineup. Giroux has recorded nine points in eight games thus far and, not surprisingly, registers the most ice-time of any Flyers forward.
All of Giroux’s points have come by way of the assist this year, a stat which he leads the entire NHL in.
Joining Giroux are Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Travis Konecny, Matt Read and Brayden Schenn, to form a top-6 group that many teams would love to have.
Voracek has recorded a point-per-game so far after a down season a year ago, and Simmonds is just below that mark at seven in eight games.

GM Garth Snow has done a great job of shedding some heavy contracts from the books, and also rebuilding a young squad along the way. He signed Radko Gudas, a very important all-round defender for Philly, to a favorable deal in the off-season.
He’s drafted Ivan Provorov, a very promising young defender who already plays important minutes and signed veteran Nick Schultz to help lead a young defense group led by Shayne Gostisbehere.
Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth have formed a nice duo in net for the Flyers, despite what the stats say early on with both maintaining sub-.900 SV%.
Both Neuvirth and Mason have started in the NHL before, though the bulk of the Philadelphia starts with seven to Neuvirth’s three so far.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Philadelphia is 2-2 at home this year, while Pittsburgh is 0-2 on the road.
- In 3 head to head matchups last season, Pittsburgh won the series 2-1 and had a total goal differential of 11-6.

With the offensive firepower on each of these two teams, it would not be surprising to see a high goal total in the rivalry match up.
Neither goalie that will start in this game hs recorded a SV% of over .910 or GAA lower than Fleury’s 2.97, lending well to a total os six or better.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
The Flyers have registered at least three goals in six of their eight games this season, a mark that is matched exactly by the visiting Penguins team.
It is also a game where Pittsburgh travels a couple of hours down the road into the same timezone, so any travel should not play a factor in their performance.
