Metropolitan Division foes Pittsburgh and Carolina will square off on Friday night in Raleigh. The Canes are a bit of a surprising team this year as they sit just one point out of a wildcard spot in the East.
Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins are riding high after vanquishing a pair of the top teams in the Eastern Conference this week. Pittsburgh played one of the most exciting hockey games of the season Monday night, knocking off the red-hot Washington Capitals by a score of 8-7 in overtime. The Pens followed that up with a convincing 4-1 win at the Bell Centre in Montreal, rolling over the Canadiens with relative ease.

Despite being one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, Pittsburgh has had a propensity for being streaky this season and they can fall flat on any given night.
The Penguins are riding a mini two-game win streak but that comes after dropping three straight games where they gave up 15 goals in doing so. Their win over the Habs was actually the first time they’d allowed fewer than two goals in a game since December 23rd. There’s little doubt that coach Mike Sullivan would like to see his team play some tighter defence in the second half of the season, and Wednesday night’s game was a prime example of that.
Pittsburgh went into Montreal and surrendered just 20 shots and very few quality scoring chances.
Carolina Hurricanes
A very tricky team is this Hurricanes squad, as they’re quietly plugging along on the fringe of a playoff spot. Perhaps it’s the small market they play in, or it could be due to the Blue Jackets setting the league on fire earlier this month, but Carolina is just a single point behind both the Flyers and Senators for the final playoff spot in the conference.
So how are they doing it? There aren’t a lot of flashy names that jump off the page when you look at this team on paper, but they play a very gritty style of hockey and are able to force teams into playing outside of their comfort zone.
Jeff Skinner is having a nice season and leads the team with 35 points, while youngsters like Victor Rask, Sebastian Aho, and Teuvo Teravainen are second through fourth on the team respectively.

All of those three are 23 or younger, with Aho the baby of the group at just 19. Add 24-year-old blueliner Justin Faulk, and 19-year-old Noah Hanifin to the mix and this is a team that people need to look out for in years to come.
They may not quite be playoff ready yet, but they’re playing good hockey and can beat any team on any given night. Oh, and they’re a very good team at PNC Arena, sporting a record of 15-4-1

Free Pittsburgh vs. Carolina NHL Hockey Prediction:
This has the makings of a trap game for the Penguins. They’re coming off big wins over top level competition and it just feels like they may take the Canes a bit lightly and it’ll cost them.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Carolina +115
Carolina is very good at home as mentioned, while the Pens are just kind of average on the road with a record of 9-9-3. The Pens won the first meeting of the season 3-2 in Pittsburgh, I think the tables are turned when they meet in North Carolina.
