Montreal is the hottest team in the league to start off the 2016-17 season, having recorded a point in every game while jumping out early to a 9-0-1 start.
Carey Price has returned after an injury plagued year a season ago, and is solidifying his role as the best goaltender on the planet.
Philadelphia, while looking better than they did last year and having their offensive guys clicking, have left a little to be desired on the defensive side of their game.
They currently sit in the thick of the Metropolitan division race with 13 points, just three back of the division leading Rangers.
Philadelphia Flyers
Philadelphia’s captain is tied for second in scoring at the time of writing, with 13 points in 12 games.
After experiencing a down season by his standards a year ago, where he tallied 67 points in 78 games, Giroux appears to be back to his point-per-game ways.
He’s actually shooting well below his career average for shooting percentage, so there may be even more room to grow the point total if his 6.7 mark at current improves to close to the 10.9% that he’s registered over his career.

Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds are each either at, or near, a point-per-game as with 11 and 12 respectively, providing a vaunted offensive threat for the Flyers.
The depth in Philadelphia is also a lot better this season, with rookie Travis Konecny registering 8 points in his young career, and Matt Read contributing six goals as well.
GM Ron Hextall made an important signing in Radko Gudas, lcoking up the rugged and well-rounded defenseman before allowing him to test free agency, on a three-year pact that appears to be a steal at $3mm annually.
Rookie Ivan Provorov and fellow young defenseman, Brandon Manning, have both shown flashes of great potential and continue to earn more trust and ice-time from coach Dave Hakstol.
The goaltending in Philadelphia has left much to be desired this year, with Steve Mason and Michael Neuvirth both holding save percentages right near the .875 mark while essentially splitting duties.
The defense in front of them certainly could be better, but the two tendies need to figure it out or Philly stands no chance.
Montreal Canadiens
The off-season trade heard ‘round the hockey world has paid enormous dividends for the Montreal Canadiens so far this season.
Shea Weber was acquired for fellow blueliner, PK Subban, on what was widely panned by the analytics community as a bad trade for the Habs.
Weber has done his part to silence those critics, sharing the team lead in points with 10 in 10 games which includes four goals.
He also has registered a league-leading +14 rating and provided the necessary leadership qualities to help his team to the top spot in the NHL.
Alex Galchenyuk may finally be realizing his enormous potential that made him the 3rd overall selection in 2012.
While he’s been an effective NHL player, the talent is undeniable and the offensive skill is flourishing this season, evidenced by his 10 points in 10 games to share the Habs’ head with Weber.

Carey Price is the best goalie on the planet and he’s back in full form this season, fresh off a World Cup of Hockey victory this summer.
Price has an otherworldly .964 SV% and 1.17 GAA this season, earning a win in each of his six games played.
While there’s no questioning his talent, the defense is playing excellently in front of the crease, and back-up Al Montoya is also benefitting from it with a .955 SV% and 1.47 GAA of his own in his four games.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- The Flyers have an even goal differential on the year, with a total of 43 both in favor and against.
- Montreal has a goal differential of +20, tied for the NHL lead.
- Montreal has recorded a point in every game this season and owns the best record in the league.
Free Philadelphia Flyers vs Montreal Canadiens NHL Hockey Prediction
Why go against the grain when there’s no reason to? Montreal has shown no signs of slowing down and the Bell Centre home-ice advantage is a tough atmosphere for any visiting team to enter.
Weber will likely be tasked with shutting down Giroux and the top-line, a tough task but one he is accustomed to and flourished in.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Montreal -1.5
It’s been nearly impossible beating Price this year- or Montoya for that matter- and while Philadelphia’s offense is solid, their defense and goaltending as vastly outmatched here by Montreal’s.
Give me the Habs -1.5 with the empty net option built-in to the pick.
