The Flyers have stumbled of late and now see themselves on the outside looking-in at a playoff spot. They sit in 5th in the Metro, with the surging New York Islanders only one point back with a game at hand.
Edmonton, meanwhile, have a firm grasp on a playoff seed at the time of writing with 68 points, currently sitting 3rd in the Pacific but with a game at hand on the 2nd place Anaheim Ducks.
Philadelphia Flyers
After a nice streak in December, the Flyers have regressed back down to a borderline playoff team, and one with some major holes in the lineup.

The team currently ranks 22nd in goals per game at 2.5, and 23rd in goals against, at 2.9. The defensive unit has some nice pieces to build around in Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere, but has been leaky as a whole this season.
Provorov just turned 20 years old and has shown flashes of brilliance and the ability to quarterback a powerplay. He leads Flyers’ defenders with 23 points in 56 games.
Jakub Vorabek leads all Philadelphia players on the stat sheets with 47 points. He is joined in the 40+ points club by fellow star forwards, Claude Giroux (41) and Wayne Simmonds (40) as the only three Flyers to achieve this mark.
Their plus-minus rating, however, has been a collective minus-48.
The goaltending duo of Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth simply hasn’t cut it. Neither of the two netminders have a save percentage north of .900 and their 2.90 and 2.67 GAAs, respectively, are amongst the worst of any duo in the league.
Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid has essentially dragged his team into a playoff spot himself, leading the league in points with 63 in just 57 games played.
The sophomore sensation has also produced an excellent plus-17 rating and is driving play when on the ice, which is a place where he resides a lot considering his 21:11 ATOI.
Leon Draisaitl and Cam Talbot have been the other two MVPs for the Edmonton Oilers this year. Draisaitl has combined with McDavid to form one of the best offensive duos in the league this season, chipping in 21 goals and 50 points of his own.
It seems that all the team needs is just one more player who can drive another line… something, perhaps, that Taylor Hall could’ve done had he not been dealt?

As mentioned, Cam Talbot has been excellent and has carried a large bulk of the load in net.
He’s appeared in 51 games this season and owns a .920 SV% and a 2.36 GAA on the year, helping the Oilers to achieve the 7th best goals against per game mark in the league.
NHL Betting Trends:

Free Philadelphia Flyers vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey Prediction:
Edmonton will look for consecutive wins for the first time since January 26th, and should be able to do so against a skidding Flyers team. The two rosters are both top heavy in terms of elite talent, though the Oilers’ have greatly outperformed that of the Flyers this season.
There is a significant advantage in net for the Oil, with Talbot dominating the stat categories against either Philadelphia netminder.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Edmonton -1.5.
The defense should also hold an edge against the porous backend of the Flyers.
