One of the hottest teams in the NHL in Philadelphia heads to Detroit to take on the Red Wings, a team scrambling to find some consistency and string wins together.
The Flyers have won seven straight games while the Red Wings are 4-4 in their last eight.
Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers have won each of their last seven games dating back to November 27. In this impressive run, Philly has tallied 26 goals and held opponents to 17.
Right winger Wayne Simmonds is continuing his brilliant season. He leads the team with 26 points, including 15 goals, putting him 4th in the NHL in goal scoring. During this seven game streak, Simmonds has put up five goals and two assists.
Captain Claude Giroux has been on fire during Philly’s winning streak. Since the team’s last loss, Giroux has 10 points (5G, 5A) and has been a key factor in the Flyers’ awesome offense.
The problem for Philadelphia has been the terrible defense. While the Flyers rank 1st in the NHL in goals scored, the team ranks dead last in goals allowed. The two ends of the spectrum could not have been more evident than in the Flyers’ 6-5 win over Edmonton on December 8th.

With such a high flying offense, you would expect an easy win over a middling team like Detroit. However, the NHL-worst defense makes Philly a wildcard, despite the winning streak.
Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings enter Sunday evening coming off a 4-1 loss to Columbus.
Currently 5th in the Atlantic Division, Detroit is struggling to find a way to string wins together. In their last eight games – five of which went to overtime or a shootout – the Red Wings are 4-4.
Detroit is another prime example of a very average team. The Red Wings rank 17th in goals for and 18th in goals against. The goal-scoring just hasn’t been there so far this year.
Center Dylan Larkin is leading the team in goals with nine but no one else can seem to catch fire on that end.
Captain Henrik Zetterberg leads the team with 20 points but only six of those points are goals.

The final season in Joe Lewis Arena hasn’t been kind to Detroit. At home, the Red Wings are a paltry 6-7-2 and have lost five of those games by one goal.
Detroit will have to find some way to limit the Flyers’ NHL-leading offense and hope they can capitalize on the team’s awful defense.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Philadelphia is 2-4 ATS in last 6 games
- The OVER is 3-1-1 in Detroit’s last 5 games
Free Philadelphia Flyers vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Flyers should have no problem taking care of the Red Wings at home.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Phili ML
With Wayne Simmonds and Claude Giroux playing so well, and the Red Wings having such a hard time finding consistency on both sides of the ice, I can’t imagine Philly leaving Joe Louis Arena without a win.
