The Ottawa Senators have been a nice story this season, currently sitting in 2nd in the Atlantic Division and firmly in a playoff spot. There were numerous storylines amongst the team that made you respect what they’ve been able to accomplish this season.
Colorado, meanwhile, has been an unmitigated disaster in their new head coach, Jason Bednar’s, first season. The Avalanche sit dead last in the NHL and are poised for the top lottery odds for the coming draft.
Ottawa Senators
The Senators were active at the trade deadline, dealing away former first-round pick, Curtis Lazar, to the Calgary Flames in return for depth defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka and a second-round selection.
Lazar had a tough season in Ottawa after returning from mono, registering just one assist in 33 games while only averaging 8:49 TOI per game under new coach, Guy Boucher.

A change of scenery was needed for the young center, who still just 22 and has a ton of potential.
Also joining the Sens is Alex Burrows, who was acquired from Vancouver in exchange for blue-chip prospect, Jonathan Dahlen. Burrows scored both goals in his Ottawa debut, a 2-1 victory over the Colorado team they’ll face in this matchup.
Craig Anderson made an emotional headline, posting a shutout and drawing tears in his final game before he left the team upon finding out about his wife’s cancer diagnosis.
He is now back with the team after months away, and doesn’t appear to have missed a beat as he owns a .931 SV% and a 2.24 GAA on the year.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado ranks last in the league in both goals per game (1.9) and goals against (3.3) in their first season under new coach, Jason Bednar.
Bednar has won at every level he’s coached so far, but could this be a one-and-done for him with the Avs?
As mentioned above, the Avalanche are a lock for the top-odds in this coming draft lottery and are currently the only team mathematically eliminated from the playoffs already.
Let that sink in for a minute… they still have 17 games left and cannot make a wildcard spot.
What’s surprising is the lack of offense, with their scoring appearing to be a strength on paper. The top two lines consist of Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog are all amongst the top young talent in the league.
Duchene is likely to be dealt, as he has been on record saying that he would accept a move and was the big name of watch at the deadline.

He wasn’t dealt, as the market will likely be greater for him at the NHL Draft, so once again, he will be a big name to watch and should be in a new uniform next season.
The return for Duchene will likely need to be a top young defenseman, as there is a big shortage of them in Colorado.
Part of the reason for the low scoring on the team is because Colorado’s defenseman have struggled to get their young offensive talent the puck.
