Ottawa comes into Arizona on Thursday night, and the outlooks for both clubs couldn’t look any different. The Senators have been playing in playoff atmosphere hockey as of late, already having won 3 games at home in March.
The atmosphere inside the Canadian Tire Centre has rivalled what it feels like during a Leafs-Sens playoff series, and the Sens are thriving in it.
Meanwhile the Arizona Coyotes have had a season fairly typical for the franchise. Far out of the playoff race the club is going to miss the post-season for the fifth straight season.
Even worse, there doesn’t appear to be much reason for the club to be hopeful for the future.
Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators have only won one playoff series since making it all the way to the cup final in 2007.

They’ve had some strong play as of late however, and not only are they starting to put some room between them and the teams behind them, they aren’t out of the running for the divisional lead.
They are 6 points back of Montreal for the lead in the Atlantic, but they also have 3 games in hand. Should the Sens win each of those 3 games it would put them in 1st place, as they would have the tiebreaker of total wins.
This will be the second game of a back-to-back for Ottawa, having played in Dallas the night before. They’d won their previous 3 games before then, including a crucial 4-2 victory over a potential first round opponent in Boston.
The Sens have 3 players who’ve crossed the 20 goal threshold so far this season. Mark Stone and Kyle Turris each have netted 22 goals, while Mike Hoffman has 20.
Arizona Coyotes
The Coyotes are looking as though they will be going into the NHL lottery draft with the second best odds behind only Colorado. It’ll be the fifth straight year the club has missed the playoffs.
It sort of hurts your franchise’s positive feelings for the future when your top scorer, Radim Vrbata, is 35 years old as well. If you’re second last in the league and you’re trodding a 35-year old onto the ice every night after the trade deadline something has gone wrong.

Teams wanted Vrbata, he submitted a list of places he’d like to go, but it was all for not. Speculation is there were as many as 8 teams who wanted him.
The Coyotes rank 27th in the league in terms of goals scored, and 28th in goals allowed.
NHL Betting Trends:
