NHL Power Rankings March 27th
Looking for our updated NHL Power Rankings? Two more weeks have passed in the NHL – there are just a couple more before we start the second, grueling season! Four teams have already qualified for the playoffs with many, many more battling for a top eight spot in their respective divisions.
While some teams have fallen off a cliff the last couple of weeks (Minnesota and San Jose), there are some teams making a late-season push (St. Louis, Anaheim and Nashville).

So where does your favorite team sit as we head down the stretch in the NHL Regular Season? Let’s take a look in Dave B’s bi-weekly NHL Power Rankings.
1. Washington Capitals
(49-17-8)
– Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Caps seem to be over their mini-slump and are ramping up for what they hope is a very long playoff run.
They have won four straight games heading into the weekend and still look like the team to beat – they have allowed a league-low 163 goals against so far which is a good sign heading into the postseason.
Ovechkin, Backstrom, Holtby and gang have this team in a familiar spot – unfortunately their success will be measured in the playoffs.
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
(26-18-11)
– Two Weeks Ago: 1
Despite the almost unfair rash of injuries the Pens have stayed in the thick of the President’s Trophy race – a true testament to how great this team is top-to-bottom.
They have lost three straight heading into the week but as the healthy get back playing, Pittsburgh becomes the team to beat yet again.

Keep in mind this is still the top scoring team in the game by a wide margin despite all of the injuries.
3. Columbus Blue Jackets
(48-19-7)
– Two Weeks Ago: 5
Just when you think the Jackets are dead, they put together a 7-2-1 string over their last 10 games to climb into second in the overall standings. Sergei Bobrovsky has been the key – he is 9-0-2 in his last 11 games and HAS to be the Vezina winner this year.
Columbus is scary folks – get used to hearing their names as possible upset Cup winners.
4. Chicago Blackhawks
(48-21-6)
– Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Blackhawks are who we thought they were – the best in the West and ready for a typically long playoff run.
They are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games overall and are 18-4-1 in their last 23! Success has become ho-hum in Chicago – everyone is wary of this squad!
5. Anaheim Ducks
(41-23-11)
– Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Ducks enter this week as the hottest team in the NHL – 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and on a four game win streak.
Anaheim seems to be peeking at just the right time and with the veteran leadership in the squad you wouldn’t expect a letdown anytime soon.
6. New York Rangers
(46-26-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Rangers barely hold onto #6 in the Rankings this week – they are 4-4-2 in their last 10 games and have lost an astounding seven straight games at home – hmmm!
It’s a good thing that they did enough earlier on and that they are the second best scoring team in the game – but maybe they don’t want home ice in the first round of the playoffs!
7. Minnesota Wild
(44-24-7)
– Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Wild are free-falling – they could realistically be out of the top 10 thanks to a 2-7-1 stretch over their last 10 games.
I’m not quite sure what to make of it but Minnesota suddenly seems like a vulnerable squad.
8. Montreal Canadiens
(42-24-9)
– Two Weeks Ago: 9
The Habs seem to be over their funk – they have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
Montreal needed to work out a few kinks but now that they have, they appear to be a serious threat in the insane East. Carey Price makes them so all by himself!

9. Calgary Flames
(42-29-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Flames suddenly find themselves just five points back of first place in the Pacific thanks to a 7-3-0 stretch in their last 10 games.
Their 207 goals against so far is a bit of a red flag for this team going forward but there is zero doubt that this team now believes it can contend this year!
10. Edmonton Oilers
41-25-9)
– Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Oilers are within striking distance of the Ducks in the Pacific too – just two points behind as we enter this week.
The team has gone 6-1 in their last seven games and seem to be willing their way to victories every night. With Conor McDavid possibly the next 100-point man in the NHL Edmonton looks like a legit team in the muddled West.
11. Ottawa Senators
(41-25-8)
– Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Sens have gone 5-3-2 in their last 10 games but have been dominated in three recent games against Montreal.
Ottawa had a chance to overtake the Habs in those games but proved that they just may be the “best of the average” in the stellar East.
12. St. Louis Blues
(40-28-6)
– Two Weeks Ago: 17
The Blues have climbed back into the playoff picture in the West thanks to a 9-1-1 stretch in their last 11 games – their remaining schedule is littered with bottom-feeders so there is a chance they could improve their standing before the playoffs.
This team has largely under-achieved this whole season but just maybe they are peeking at the right time.
13. San Jose (42-26-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 7
14. Toronto (35-24-15) – Two Weeks Ago: 16
15. Nashville (38-25-11) – Two Weeks Ago: 14
16. Boston (39-30-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 13
17. New York Islanders (35-27-12) – Two Weeks Ago: 15
18. Tampa Bay (36-29-9) – Two Weeks Ago: 18
19. Carolina (33-27-13) – Two Weeks Ago: 24
