NHL Power Rankings January 30
Looking for our updated NHL Power Rankings? Two weeks have passed since my last edition of the Power Rankings – the All-Star break looms. We have reached the unofficial half-way point of the NHL season – this year’s All Stars strutted their stuff this past weekend while the rest of the league gets a much-needed break before the stretch drive of what has been another grueling season of action.

There have been some legitimate surprises throughout the first half of the NHL season and some definite disappointments but one thing is for sure – the cream will always rise to the top.
So where does your favorite team sit at the All-Star Break? Let’s take a look in Dave B’s bi-weekly NHL Power Rankings.
1. Washington (33-10-6)
– Two Weeks Ago: 1
How good have the Caps been? They have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games overall and they have scored 160 goals in their 49 games – while surrendering just 106. There are absolutely ZERO holes on this team – from Braden Holtby in goal to the serious balance displayed up front.
Washington is once again a contender for the President’s Trophy – be interesting to see if they can get it done in the playoffs.
2. Minnesota (32-11-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Wild hold onto the #2 spot and have numbers that mirror those of the Capitals. Minnesota has 160 goals for this season and 109 against and they have gone 8-2-2 in their last 10 games overall.
Devan Dubnyk continues to be a serious candidate for the Vezina this year and cast-off Eric Staal leads the team with 40 points in 47 games.

Everything is going right for Minnesota right now – easily my #2 team.
3. Edmonton (28-15-8)
– Two Weeks Ago: 9
No – your eyes aren’t deceiving you – that’s the Edmonton Oilers at #3. They have gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and sit in a tie for seventh in the Overall Standings!
Connor McDavid continues to lead the league in points, with 59, Cam Talbot has been a revelation and the Special Teams have been well… Special. Edmonton is a force – nobody saw that coming this year!
4. San Jose (31-17-2)
– Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Sharks are the other surging team in the West right now – they are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games overall.
They have been scoring and keeping the puck out of the back of their net with relative ease lately – Brent Burns is the runaway leader for the Norris Trophy and even bust Mikkel Boedker is starting to contribute.
5. Columbus (32-12-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Jackets have fallen off a tad – they have gone just 5-5 in their last 10 games overall and have lost two straight heading into the All-Star Break but still sit third in the Overall Standings.
The culprit? The offense that has seen Sam Gagne go 16 games without a goal and Brandon Saad who has just one point in his last eight. Sergei Bobrovsky himself keeps this team in the top 5 – BUT FOR HOW LONG?
6. Chicago (30-16-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Blackhawks are another top flight team that hasn’t looked elite the last couple of weeks – they are 6-4 in their last 10 and enter the All-Star Break on a two game losing streak including one to the lowly Jets.
The good news for Chicago is that Jonathan Toews has woken up and looks ready to dominate yet again.
7. Anaheim (27-15-9)
– Two Weeks Ago: 7
The Ducks have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games overall – they were 2-2-0 last week and scored just eight times in those contests – reason for at least a little concern. Still, this team is inside the top eight in Power Play and Penalty Killing.
The goaltending HAS to get better for the Ducks – John Gibson and Jonathan Bernier are both struggling badly.
8. Pittsburgh (30-13-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 5
How about another elite team that has looked far from its top form? The Pens have gone just 5-5-0 in their last 10 games overall and have lost two straight heading into All-Star Weekend.
The team certainly looks flat right now but any squad with a 20-3-2 home record HAS to be knocking on the door of a top 5 spot in the Rankings! The crazy depth up front says so – so does their league-leading 172 goals for!
9. Montreal (29-14-7)
– Two Weeks Ago: 4
Continuing the theme of good clubs that haven’t been playing great hockey – enter the Montreal Canadiens who have gone just 4-5-1 in their last 10 games.
Injuries continue to plague these guys – Brendan Gallagher, Alex Galchenyuk, Andrei Markov and David Desharnais are all guys on the shelf right now.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Alex Radulov has been a shining star however and Carey Price WILL BE better – meaning that Montreal is still in good shape.
10. New York Rangers (31-17-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Rangers are just 5-5-0 in their last 10 games and finished the first half of the season as the second highest scoring team in the league. The team is just 2-5 in their last five games at home – something that will change sooner than later.
Meanwhile Henrik Lundqvist has been terrific as of late – 3-1-0 in his last four starts with a 1.50 GAA and .945 save percentage.
11. Ottawa (26-15-6) –
Two Weeks Ago: 17
The Senators picked up seven of eight points in the week prior to the All-Star Break and are 6-2-2 in their last 10- games overall – eleventh in the NHL Overall Standings despite playing fewer games than anyone else in the league.
This team should get some key pieces back in the second half and they added Tommy Wingels last week in a trade with the Sharks. Ottawa is legit folks – an easy dirty dozen team as we head into the second half of the season.
12. Toronto (23-15-9)
– Two Weeks Ago: 11
The Leafs have gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games – Mike Babcock has this team one point back of the final Wild Card spot in the East.
With Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner playing like vets and the culture in Toronto having taken a 180 degree turn it is easy to get fired up about the Leafs – FINALLY!!
13. Nashville (24-17-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 20
14. Los Angeles (24-21-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 14
15. Philadelphia (25-19-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 19
16. Boston (25-21-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 12
17. New York Islanders (21-17-9) – Two Weeks Ago: 26
18. St. Louis (24-20-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 15
19. Vancouver (23-21-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 22

27. New Jersey (20-21-9) – Two Weeks Ago: 25
28. Detroit (20-20-9) – Two Weeks Ago: 24
29. Arizona (16-26-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 29
30. Colorado (13-31-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 30
