NHL Power Rankings January 16
Looking for our updated NHL Power Rankings? Two weeks have passed since my last edition of the Power Rankings – the All-Star break looms.
It has been a season of streaks – Columbus nearly stretched their win streak to 17, the Minnesota Wild had a 12 game streak a couple of weeks ago, and this week’s top team is currently enjoying a nine game win streak.

There has been a minor shake-up atop the Rankings this week as a result.
So where does your favorite team sit as we roll into the dog days of NHL Regular Season? Let’s take a look in Dave B’s bi-weekly NHL Power Rankings.
1. Washington (29-9-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 8
It took a while for the Caps to regain their rightful position atop the Rankings but they are finally here.
On the heels of a nine game winning streak there seems to be nothing that this team can’t do right now – score goals or keep the puck out of the back of their net.
Braden Holtby has posted shutouts in three of his last five starts – perhaps the biggest reason Washington leads the NHL Overall Standings.
2. Minnesota (28-9-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 2
The other Hottest team in the league is the Wild who have gone 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and enter this week on a four game win streak.
The team is 10-0-2 in their last 12 road games, the team is getting scoring from all four lines and Devan Dubnyk has taken his game to a different level between the pipes.
The team has allowed just 92 goals on the season – by far the best in the game and have a league-best +46 goal differential.

There are ZERO holes on this team right now – a worthy #2 in the Rankings.
3. Columbus (29-9-4)
– Two Weeks Ago: 1
The Jackets have fallen off a tad – THEY HAD TO! After their 16 game win streak they have gone 6-4-0 in their last 10 games.
The defense and Sergei Bobrovsky have come back down to earth – not saying they have fallen off a cliff but they aren’t as “out-of-this-world” as they were a couple of weeks ago.
4. Montreal (27-11-6)
– Two Weeks Ago: 7
Montreal has been a tad difficult to figure out the last few weeks – they scored seven in a win against the Jets, they scored five in a victory over the Rangers… and then there was a 7-1 loss to the Wild!
That said Montreal is getting a whole lot healthier by the day and are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games overall.
5. Pittsburgh (26-11-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Penguins are in the midst of a rare slump – they enter the week on a three game slide. With Kris Letang healthy and contributing again Pittsburgh is once again one of the most impressive offensive forces in the game.
145 goals for is second best in the game – their 124 against HAS to improve however.
6. Chicago (27-14-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Blackhawks have gone just 5-5-0 in their last 10 games but if any team has earned the benefit of the doubt it is Chicago. Two of their losses last week came to Washington and Minnesota – the top two teams in the Rankings.
What is up with Jonathan Toews? He has just seven goals and 14 assists in 37 games so far. I expect that to change and for the Hawks to re-emerge as a top 5 team.
7. Anaheim (24-13-9)
– Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Ducks are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and have seized control of the schizophrenic Pacific. They are healthy and boast one of the most impressive top two lines in the game.
Anaheim is finally starting to play like the team we thought they were.
8. New York Rangers (28-15-1)
– Two Weeks Ago: 5
The Rangers are still the top scoring team in the NHL (152 goals for) and they still have the second best goal differential in the game (+36) but the team has struggles to a 5-5 record over their last 10 games.
9. Edmonton (23-15-7)
– Two Weeks Ago: 9
Those of you waiting for the demise of the Oilers – keep waiting. The team has gone 5-3-2 in their last 10 games and enters the week on a two game win streak.

One thing is certain though – if Conor McDavid goes down the team is a world of hurt.
10. San Jose (26-16-2) – Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Sharks have been a tad disappointing but get to stay in the top 10 because of the talent on the roster and the fact that they remain inside the top 10 in Overall Rankings.
Brent Burns has been remarkable and Mikkel Boedker was finally decent last week. San Jose has a good team on paper and should remain a top 10 squad.
11. Toronto (20-13-8)
– Two Weeks Ago: 15
How about them Leafs? 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. The youth movement led by Matthews and Marner has exceeded expectations – maybe we shouldn’t be shocked that Toronto is 7 games over .500.
12. Boston (23-18-5)
– Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Bruins have been just OK the last couple of weeks – 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.
That said Tuukka Rask continues to be a shining light, Brad Marchand is heating up and the team is finally .500 at home – they should continue to build on that and possibly climb the ladder – should!
13. Carolina (21-15-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 18
14. Los Angeles (22-17-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 19
15. St. Louis (23-16-5) – Two Weeks Ago: 13
16. Calgary (23-20-3) – Two Weeks Ago: 17
17. Ottawa (22-15-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 11
18. Florida (20-16-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 20
19. Philadelphia (22-18-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 14
20. Nashville (20-16-7) – Two Weeks Ago: 22
21. Dallas (18-18-8) – Two Weeks Ago: 21
22. Vancouver (20-19-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 24
23. Tampa Bay (20-20-4) – Two Weeks Ago: 16

29. Arizona (13-23-6) – Two Weeks Ago: 29
