Two division leaders lock horns in south Florida on Thursday night – both teams that can light the lamp with the best of them. It should make for entertaining hockey at the Amalie Arena, and possibly some sunburns on the back of goalie’s necks that aren’t caused by lying on the beach.
New York Islanders
In what some expected to be a depression and malaise following the departure of franchise cornerstone John Tavares to Toronto, the boys from Long Island have actually done the contrary.
The Isles are off to a great start to the 2018-19 campaign.

The fact that New York has done this without Taveras and a single goal from Mathew Barzal – last year’s Rookie of the Year – is remarkable.
For one thing, the Isles are getting great goaltending from their tandem of Thomas Greiss and Robin Lehner, the latter doing a great job battling back after his documented struggles with alcoholism and bi-polar disorder. Long Island is also getting notable contributions from Brock Nelson (seven goals), Josh Bailey (15 points to lead team) and Anders Lee (13 points).
Tampa Bay Lightning
Everyone knew the Bolts were among the league’s elite, and they have not disappointed so far. Tampa Bay has won 11 of its 15 opening matches, center Brayden Point is totally ripping it up with nine goals and 19 points, and last year’s stud Nikita Kucherov is also finding his legs.
The Lightning just re-upped forward Yanni Gourde, an underrated but sublimely talented part of the picture, with a cap-friendly deal.

The arrow continues to point upward for Tampa Bay, and no one knows when the vertical trajectory will ever slow down for these Floridians. It doesn’t hurt coming off a 5-2 thrashing for Connor McDavid and the upstart Edmonton Oilers, either.

Free New York Islanders vs. Tampa Bay Lightning NHL Prediction:
The visiting Islanders have been a nice story that people did not expect, even with the perennially-successful Barry Trotz hovering behind the bench these days. New Team President Lou Lamoriello is starting to be seen as an old-school windbag, so it must feel like retribution for him to see the team he assembled handling the Metro division thus far.
That being said, Tampa is really, really good. Ink has been spilled about Maple Leafs (of course) and the balanced Boston Bruins, but the Bolts are the class of the Eastern Conference until they prove otherwise. This could turn into a track meet of a game, but the smart money is on the Lightning.
