A very entertaining Game 1 saw the New York Islanders come from behind and hold off a late Panthers rush as they stole home ice in a 5-4 win.
Now, the Islanders to take command of the series and steal Game 2 in this quick turnaround on Friday night.
New York Islanders
Jonathan Tavares has been a major key to success all season long for the Islanders. It seems like this team will only go as far as he takes them. Well in Game 1, he certainly put the team on his back with a goal and a pair of assists as he simply torched the Panthers defensive front.
While Thomas Greiss did struggle at times during the night, he faced a lot of shots and made some huge saves. Greiss turned away 42 shots and perhaps had the play of the night making a point blank save on Jagr’s shot with just seconds to go.

New York will now look for it’s first 2-0 lead in any series in the playoffs since 1983. They took a 2-0 lead over the Oilers, only to eventually sweep them in 4 games.
Thomas Greiss will continue to get the starts as Halak continues to work his way back from injury.
Florida Panthers
This was the first time since 2012 the Panthers were making a playoff appearance and it appeared some jitters were there for them. Florida got out to an early lead and led 3-2 in the 2nd, only to see the Islanders rattle off 3 straight.
The defensive breakdowns have been rare for Florida this year, but in Game 1, they were sloppy in the back.
The good news for them is they don’t have to think about this loss very long. They were right there in Game 1 and certainly have the capability of stealing a game in New York. However, avoiding a 2-0 hole is an absolute must here.

Offensively for the Panthers, Reilly Smith was the key as he put in 2 goals, but made it very apparent that while the team is frustrated, they can’t let the loss linger.
Jagr continues to struggle to find the net in playoff time as well. His last 32 playoff games have resulted zero goals and 16 assists. He was the main reason behind the offensive success in the regular season for the Panthers and he’ll certainly need to step his game up here in Game 2.
