For this first time in multiple decades, the Red Wings will likely be on the outside looking in of the playoff picture. The Wings are currently at the bottom of the Atlantic Division and second last in the East.
The Islanders are in a battle for the last playoff seed in the Conference, sitting one point back of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the final wildcard spot.
New York Islanders
The Islanders have gone 8-4-1 in their last 13 games and appear to be enjoying life under the direction of new head coach, Doug Weight, who took over coaching duties from Jack Capuano.
Anders Lee has benefitted from the change, now leading the Isles with 22 goals on the season. Sitting one behind Lee in the category is captain, John Tavares, who leads his team in points with 49 in 58 games.

Josh Bailey has also stepped up his game, tallying seven points in his past 10 games while playing alongside Tavares and Lee on the top line.
Nick Leddy leads the way in average time on ice per game for the Islanders, at 23:03 per game. He also sits atop the defensive scoring for the team with 31 points, 12 of which have come on the powerplay.
He’s been one of the better trades that GM Garth Snow has made in his tenure.
Thomas Greiss has taken over the starting role from Jaroslav Halak, who has been shunned to the third in line for the Isles. Greiss owns a strong .917 SV% on the year with a 2.55 GAA, with two shutouts.
Detroit Red Wings
Thins have spiraled downwards for the Red Wings this season, with the most recent blemish on their season coming in the form of the Gustav Nyquist spear and subsequent suspension.
Nyquist earned six games in the press box for his vicious spear to the face of Minnesota Wild defenseman, Jered Spurgeon.
The spearing can be seen as a culmination of the Red Wings’ season as a whole, with the frustration finally boiling over into an ugly scene.
The Wings now sit in 26th overall in goals per game at 2.4, and have allowed the sixth highest mark against at 3.0. Captain Henrik Zetterberg leads the team in points with 45, and grading out with a favorable plus-12 rating on the year.
He is doing all he can to not be the leader of the team that is the first Detroit team to miss the playoffs since the latter 20th Century.
Thomas Vanek has been a nice signing for Detroit, collecting 37 points this season in 46 games.

He currently leads the team with 15 goals, and may be a piece that GM Ken Holland, looks at dealing come the trade deadline while looking towards the future.
Jimmy Howard has been a revelation in goal this season, and the best surprise for the Wings in this down year.
Howard lost the starting role to Petr Mrazek, but has been the better of the two thus far with a .934 SV% and a 1.96 GAA.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The Islanders rank 7th overall in goals per game at 3.0
- New York is 5-4-1 in February
- Chicago is 7-13-4 on the road this year
- Detroit has a minus-26 goal differential on the year
- Detroit is 12-13-5 at home
- Detroit is 4-5-1 in their last 10 games
Free New York Islanders vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Islanders will look to continue their surge under Doug Weight, and should face a favorable matchup against the dwindling Red Wings, who are without Gustav Nyquist.
While the Isles haven’t been great on the road, Detroit is a losing team on home ice. I expect New York to earn the victory to help lift them into a playoff spot.
