The Caps and Devils will face off for the third time out of four meetings this season on Thursday night. The Devils got the better of the Caps in late December, but Washington responded with two convincing wins (6-2 and 5-2) in New Jersey.
This isn’t quite the home stretch for the Caps, but a solid 8-10 games would all but lock up the number one seed in the East and in all likelihood, the Presidents Trophy.
Washington Capitals
As mentioned, the Caps are on the verge of once again being the league’s top regular season team, although Minnesota may yet have a say in that argument.
In the East however, it’s a different story as the Caps are seven points clear of the Blue Jackets and Penguins who are tied for second in the Metropolitan Division.
The Capitals were not messing around when it came close to trade deadline time, as they grabbed perhaps the biggest name on the market in defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk.

The blueliner wasted no time making his presence felt as he logged 18 minutes of ice time in his first game with his new team, fired four shots on goal and helped the Caps secure a 4-1 win over their division rivals, the New York Rangers.
When you look at this Caps team on paper, it’s a dream team that is littered with stars at every position.
Take out the obvious ones like Alex Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom, and this team still boasts the likes of TJ Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetzov, Marcus Johansson, John Carlson, and now Shattenkirk. Oh and Braden Holtby is still their goalie.
We’ve seen this movie with the Caps before however, where they’re nearly invincible in the regular season and can’t find the next gear come post season. Is this finally their year? Only time will tell.
New Jersey Devils
This might be the most non-descript team out there, as the Devils are the polar opposite of the Caps, with very little star power to boast aside from Taylor Hall.
Kyle Palmieri leads the team in goals (no one on the Devils has hit the 20 goal mark yet), and Hall leads the way in points with 41, but the rest of the team is plodding along at similar paces.
Travis Zajac has 39 points, Adam Henrique is at 33 and Mike Cammalleri is at 30.

Corey Schneider, for my money, is still one of the better goalies in the NHL but he’s just not given a lot of run support on a lot of nights.
You have to be able to score goals and you have to be at the top of your game if you’re going to even make a game of it against the Caps, and the Devils check neither of those boxes.
The lowest scoring team in the Eastern Conference comes into this one on a four game losing streak, and have been pummeled at the hands of the Caps their last two meetings.
Thursday’s game could be an ugly one.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Washington is 25-5-1 at home this season
- New Jersey is 13-12-6 0n the road this season
- New Jersey is 0-4 in their last four games
- Devils are 1-9 in the last 10 meetings between the two
- Devils are 2-5 in the last 7 meetings in Washington.
- Washington has not lost at home since Dec. 29
Free New Jersey Devils vs. Washington Capitals NHL Hockey Prediction:
This could be a trap game for a Caps team that really put on a clinic against the Rangers, but I just don’t see them tripping up against the Devils who just can not score goals at the rate that Washington can.
If you’re counting, the Caps have scored 62 more goals than the Devils this season in the same number of games played (62).
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Washington -1.5
I’m no mathematician, but 62 more goals over the course of 62 games would indicate that the Caps score a full one more goal per game than the Devils.
