The Devils are about the most mediocre team you can find across the NHL, sitting at a 12-10-6 record with a few star players, a bunch of middling ones and a solid goalie.
The Devils are coming off of a tough 5-0 loss at the hands of the New York Rangers, relegating them to 6th in the Metro Division.
St. Louis also enters this game on the heels of a big loss, succumbing to Nashville by a 6-3 total.
The Blues, while currently sitting in 2nd place in the Central Division at a 16-10-4 record, but may want to improve upon their goals against average if they wish to remain there.
New Jersey Devils
The addition of star scoring winger, Taylor Hall, was supposed to help offensive production for the Devils team that ranked dead last in goals a season ago.
The Devils haven’t improved much with Hall, though, as they currently rank 22nd in goals per game at 2.4 on average, up from last season’s 2.2 mark.
Travis Zajac leads the way in points, with 21, across his 28 games played. However, it’s clear that Hall is the catalyst on offense for this team, with his 20 points in 20 games played.

Mike Cammalleri has produced nine goals and 17 points in his 22 games, providing some secondary scoring for a team is desperate for more production.
The defensive group certainly took a hit when Adam Larsson was sent the other way to Edmonton in the Hall deal, and Damon Severson has stepped him game up to help fill the void on the backend, Severson leads the NJ blueliners with 15 points, ahead of the next best fellow defender, John Moore, and his 10 .
The Devils as a whole rank 22nd overall in goals against per game, allowing an average of 2.9 per contest.
It’s surprising that it sits so low, between goaltender Cory Schneider and a team penalty kill that ranks 11th overall in efficiency at 84.8%.
Cory Schneider numbers continue to slide, seeing his SV% now sits at .907 and his GAA at 2.83 on the year. He was in net for all five goals versus the Rangers on Tuesday while facing 31 shots.
Schneider has only won one game in his last six tries and has a sub-.900 SV% in eight of his last nine games played.
St. Louis Blues
The Blues rank favorably in many of the major team categories, sitting 13th overall in goals per game at 2.7, 8th overall in power play percentage at 21.8% and 2nd overall in penalty kill percentage at 88.0%.
It’s surprising that the goals against ranks just 19th overall at a 2.8 rate, considering their strong defensive corps and their penalty kill rate.
The Blues will look to regroup after a 6-3 blowout loss at the hands of Nashville on Tuesday.
The defensive unit comprised of stud veterans Alex Pietrangelo, Kevin Shattenkirk and Jay Bouwmeester, along with Colton Parayko, will look to regroup after the tough loss.
Shattenkirk sits second on the team in points with 21 in 30 games in a contract year.

Vladamir Tarasenko is one of the best players in the world, and currently sits in 2nd overall in the NHL in points with his 34.
The superstar Russian winger has collected 14 goals on the year, and is a threat to score every time he steps on the ice. His efforts on the powerplay have helped the team to their 21.8%
Jake Allen takes full reigns of the starting gig in St. Louis now, and has produced a .906 SV% and 2.52 GAA on the season thus far.
Allan currently sits in a tie for 4th in the NHL in goaltender wins with 14, but will look to improve his peripheral numbers and boost the teams goals against as a whole.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- While the Devils only have one regulation loss this year on home ice, they’re 4-9-4 on the road.
- Despite their 16-10-4 record on the season, the Blues actually have a -3 goal differential.
Free New Jersey Devils vs St. Louis Blues NHL Hockey Prediction
Neither of these two teams’ netminders have performed up to standards as of late. Cory Schneider hasn’t be able to record a .900+ SV% for much of the last month, whether it’s his play of the team around him.
Jake Allen, on the year as a whole. Is barely above that mark as well.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5
Normally I wouldn’t like the over in a game featuring Schneider and the Devils, but the recent trends have caused me to think otherwise. Any game featuring Tarasenko, along with the deep group of St. Louis forwards, should lend well to a decent goal total.
With Hall fully back healthy from injury for New Jersey, they should be able to chip in a couple of their own to reach the over.
