Two of the bottom teams in the league, both in the basements of their respective divisions, will battle in the Mile High city.
It might be advantageous for neither to actually go for the win, in effort to secure a higher draft lottery percentage, considering each is out of the playoff picture.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils stood pat at the trade deadline for the most part. The trades of note were dealing expiring veteran defenseman, Kyle Quincey, to Columbus for Dalton Prout and sending P.A. Parenteau to Nashville for a 6th round pick.
The team sits 29th in goals per game, scoring at an average clip of just 2.2 per contest.

New Jersey is not much better in the goals against category either, allowing an average of 2.8 per game which places them 22nd overall in relation to their peers.
Their leading defenseman on the stat sheet is Damon Severson, who has 27 points but also carries a terrible minus-29 rating on the year. The rating is 13 points worse than the next lowest plus-minus, Pavel Zacha, who has a minus-16 rating.
Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri sit atop the point totals for NJ, each with 42 on the season, though Hall has done so in 55 games compared to Palmieri’s 63. Palmieri is the only 20 goal scorer on the team, sitting at 20 even.
The offense needs some serious re-tooling in the off-season if they’d like to compete for a playoff spot next year.
Cory Schneider has a respectable .914 SV% and a 2.65 GAA on the season, playing behind a bottom-third defense in the league, if not lower.
Schneider hasn’t been elite, but certainly is a good building block for the Devils and solidifies the crease so management can focus on address all of their other needs.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado sits dead last in the league in both goals per game and goals against, and with the lowest point total of any team by a large margin.
The Avalanche are virtually a lock for the top-odds in this coming draft lottery, as they are a whopping 15 points back of the next worst team, Arizona.
The building blocks on offense appear to be a strength and an area Colorado can build around, despite their ranking in goals per game this year.
Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog were all top-5 draft selections and have immense talent.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Duchene is the likely piece to be dealt and was the big name of watch at the deadline, but GM Joe Sakic decided it was likely best to make a significant deal in the off-season near the draft.
Duchene has 36 points on the season, trailing just Nathan MacKinnon’s 42 for the Av’s lead.
Calvin Pickard has taken over the starting role for the Avalanche, and deservedly so considering Seymon Varlamov’s .898 SV% and 3.38 GAA. Pickard owns a .907 SV% and a 2.97 GAA.
