Both these clubs can score, although Montreal has been pleasantly surprising on that front. People weren’t expecting much from Montreal’s lamp-lighting capabilities at the start of the year, but young sparkplug Max Domi and rejuvenated Tomas Tatar are leading the way for the Habs’ offence.
For the home side it basically boils down to: McJesus. Yeah, Connor McDavid is the most dangerous offensive player in the league, Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Alex Ovechkin and Auston Matthews be damned.
Montreal Canadiens
Most people expected Montreal to be hovering with nearby Ottawa near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, but it hasn’t played out that way. World-class goaltending usually leads the day for the Habs, thanks to Carey Price, but the netminding actually hasn’t been very good so far. It’s been the goal scoring – which is currently Top 10 leaguewide – that Montreal has hung its hat on.

One has to think Montreal’s offense will cool down some, but then Price might up his performance commensurately. Dare we say, the Les bleues blancs et rouges could compete for a playoff spot in 2018-19?
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers need something or someone besides McDavid. The fact Edmonton compiled so many Top 5 picks (and a few first overalls mixed in there, don’t forget) over the last decade and they are still such a one-man show is a joke.
It’s a damning assessment of the organization from owner Darryl Katz on down (we’re looking at you – GM Peter Chiarelli…I never liked that guy). Yet, if you want to see the fastest, most dynamic talent in the NHL, you must have your eyes trained on Western Canada.

Edmonton has been just average to date. Fourth in the Pacific division, McDavid leading the way with 23 points, and not much else. The Oilers’ penalty kill ranks a miserable 27th in the league (72.7%), which explains their mediocrity to an extent.
For a home win, McJesus must do his thing, but there needs to be an offensive spark from other sources also. We’re looking your way, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl. The Oil have lost their last four consecutive games.

Free Montreal Canadiens vs. Edmonton Oilers NHL Prediction:
Montreal is raising eyebrows, and rightfully so. But for some reason I like the Oilers to bounce back on the speedy home ice of Rogers Place.
They sorely need a response after a crappy last few games, and I think McDavid’s line can make hay against a goalie in Price that hasn’t found his form. The Canadiens should grab a few goals too though; expect a barnstormer.
