Montreal has shot up to the top of the rankings to begin the 2016-17 season, sitting with ones across the board with their incredible 11-1-1 record. Carey Price has been nothing short of brilliant this season, staking a claim on the Hart Trophy early on.
On the other side of the faceoff dot is the LA Kings, who are missing their star goalie, Jonathan Quick, but weathering the storm as best as possible.
While their offense hasn’t been clicking as well as hoped, with their leading scorer being a defenseman with nine points.
Los Angeles Kings
As mentioned, Alec Martinez leads the Kings in scoring (tied with Jeff Carter) with nine points in 13 games. Martinez is a solid top-4 defenseman, but isn’t likely to continue to lead his team in scoring going forward, not with the likes of Anze Kopitar on the roster.
Kopitar is the Kings’ biggest offensive star, leading the franchise in scoring for the past nine seasons and a virtual lock season-in and season-out for 70+ points.
His slow start, just seven points thus far, should turn soon but this is not the ideal matchup for this to positively regress to the mean.
Amongst Kings forwards, Jeff Carter is the leading goal-getter with five.
Carter is generally good for about 30 goals and is certainly on pace for that, but LA will look for more contributions from another 30-goal scorer from a season ago, Tyler Toffoli, who currently has netted just three.

With Quick out, as well as backup Jeff Zatkoff sidelined, the Kings have had to revert to a combination of Peter Budaj and Jack Campbell in net. Budaj has handled the bulk of the work and has filled in more admirably than most expected, posting a record of 7-3 with a .919 SV% and 1.86 GAA.
The off-season for defenseman, Shea Weber, has been excellent for the Habs thus far. Weber has been nothing short of brilliant in his short time in Montreal, registering 5 goals and 11 points, en route to posting a league best plus-15 rating in his 13 games played.
He also leads his new club in average time-on-ice at a whopping 25:50, clearly having earned the trust of the coaching staff already.
Alex Galchenyuk may finally be realizing his enormous potential and leads the team in scoring at a point per game pace (13). The feat is even more impressive when you consider that he’s done so while averaging just 15:41 of time on ice per game.
Alexander Radulov has been solid in his re-re-debut in the NHL with the Canadiens, tallying 11 points in 13 games and providing offensive skill that may make him the organization’s most talented threat since fellow Russian and former Hab, Alex Kovalev.

Carey Price is the best goalie in the league and is now fully healthy and proving it. Price owns a .953 SV% on the season with a miniscule 1.63 GAA and a perfect 8-0-0 record.
Aside from one game where he allowed four goals to the Philadelphia Flyers, Price has yet to allow more than two goals in any one game.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Price hasn’t lost a regular season game in over a calendar year, dating back to October 29th 2015
- Montreal has won 9 of their last 10 games and is a perfect 8-0 at home
- LA is 2-4-0 on the road this season.

With Price in net, it’s hard to ever bet against the Habs, not with the way they’ve been performing through the early stages of this season. Take away an outlier game against Columbus where the Habs allowed 10 goals (TEN! And all against backup, Al Montoya) the Habs would be amongst the top of the league in-goal differential.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Montreal Moneyline
The Kings have had a tough time on the road this season at a 2-4-0 record, and they enter the always-tough Bell Centre in the Eastern timezone to face Carey Price, not a recipe for success..
