There is plenty of history and bad blood in this Western Conference first round playoff match-up.
Two seasons ago, the Sharks went up three games to none in a series that Los Angeles clawed back to win four straight and despatch San Jose.
It’s taken the Sharks a long time to bounce back from that collective mental trauma, but the 2015-16 Sharks look pretty good, led by veteran Joe Thornton and multi-talented blueliner Brent Burns.
Can San Jose’s goaltending hold up well enough to finally slay its longtime in-state rival?
San Jose Sharks
It’s good to be “anyone named Joe” in Silicon Valley right now.
“Jumbo Joe” Thornton is having his best season in over half a decade, which has carried over into the postseason, while captain Joe Pavelski is simply playing the best of anyone in this series, on either team.
Despite that dominant line featuring those two players, the Kings crawled back into the series on Monday, besting the Sharks in overtime, 2-1 in hostile territory.

It was a hard-fought game in that you can’t hang much blame on anyone, but Sharks goalie Martin Jones must continue to carry the mail in net if San Jose is to maintain the upper hand in this rivalry.
Some Kings players – Tyler Toffoli, Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar of note – seem to be waking up, while L.A. goalie Jonathan Quick had the masterful performance you’d expect from him in Game 3.
The Sharks big guns – Thornton, Pavelski, Brent Burns and Company – must keep the pedal to the metal if they are to emerge victorious.
LA Kings
Game 3 is more of the playoff-style Kings hockey fans expect, as they showed just how stingy and daunting they can be in a closely-fought game and series. Veteran leader Kopitar got off the schneid with a first-period goal, young gun Tanner Pearson potted the OT winner and Quick stopped 29 pucks en route to the OT victory.
Los Angeles doesn’t seem to care whether it is playing on the road or at the Staples Center, and with what happened in 2014 (L.A. coming back from three games-to-none down to take the series) Sharks fans probably just started quaking in their boots and having PTSD flashbacks.

For success tonight and moving forward, the Kings must stymie San Jose’s lethal power play. L.A. should be able to get some goals past Jones, but the Sharks can light the lamp in a hurry with the man advantage or five-on-five.
If this happens, the Kings certainly have precedence on their side.

Free LA Kings vs. San Jose Sharks NHL Hockey Prediction
At the start of the series, head coach Peter deBoer and everyone in the Sharks dressing room knew that they’d have to dig deep to right the historical wrongs of two seasons ago. With the Kings OT win on Monday, that adversity is now staring them squarely in the face.
How San Jose reacts in Game 4 on home ice will speak volumes about how this series is going to turn out.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Sharks ML
I predict that tonight, the Sharks will find what they need in the intestinal fortitude department to get the job done.
A win tonight will provide a commanding 3-1 series lead, plus the Sharks have shown that they are comfortable performing when the series turns back south to Los Angeles.
I look for players like Thornton and Marleau to continue to put exclamation points on what have been exquisite careers. A big game on a stage like tonight is the type of thing that will cement Jumbo Joe in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
It won’t be easy, though, because the Kings look like they are coming on strong. This franchise can always pour it on when it matters.
