The Florida Panthers have been quite the team to watch this season, firing their coach who was a Jack Adams nominee just a season ago.
Gerard Gallant had a better than .500 record at the time he was relieved of his duties, and the Panthers have gone 2-3-4 under new coach/ head office exec, Tom Rowe.
Considering the Jets have the likes on Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele on their roster, it’s surprising to see the team sit just 20th overall in goals per game on the year.
Their other rankings in the respective team stats also don’t look too favorable.
Florida Panthers
The early results of the coaching shake-up in Florida do not appear to be favorable, as Gallant left with a winning record and the Panthers have since slipped to the tune of 2-3-4 under Tom Rowe.
Gallant was able to keep the Panthers afloat while the team battled a number of significant injuries, but it hasn’t translated since his departure.

Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Marchessault are tied for the team lead in points at 20 apiece. Marchessault missed some time in December due to a knee injury, but has now returned to the lineup.
Barkov seems to be okay with the coaching change, considering he’s tallied six points in seven December games.
The team clearly misses Jonathan Huberdeau and Nick Bjustad, who combined for 93 points in 143 games last year.
Huberdeau was third on the Panthers with 20 goals and 59 points in 2015-16, but has been sidelined all season with an Achilles injury.
Huberdeau is one the current road trip, travelling with the team for the first time all season that may signal a return may be imminent in the coming weeks.
Veteran Roberto Luongo has performed well yet again this year, showing no real signs of aging yet. Bobby Lou has a 10-9-2 record on the season with a .918 SV% and a 2.39 GAA. Lou is just 3-6 over his past nine starts.
Winnipeg Jets
Patrik Laine is the real deal, sniping 17 goals so far this year in his rookie campaign. He may be the best goal scorer that the Jets have seen since Teemu Selanee, which is quite the company to hold.
His 17 tallies lead the team, and place him 3rd overall in the entire NHL in the category.
Mark Scheifele has enjoyed a breakout campaign of his own in 2016-17. Scheifele currently sits in a tie for 10th in the league in points, having tallied a clean 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in his 29 games.
He is surrounded by solid talent, having Nikolaj Ehlers and Blake Wheeler flanking him on the wings.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Ehlers is another top young under teams control for many years to come.
The former 9th overall pick has registered 24 points in 32 games played and possesses great speed to complement Scheifele’s. Wheeler, the steady veteran, is a big body who can get to the dirty areas and act as the trigger man on the line.
Starting goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, is a former 5th round pick has registered a 2.74 GAA and a .907 SV% on the season with a 10-10-1 record.
Hellebuyck hasn’t replicated his strong numbers from a year ago, but still has a stranglehold on the starting role, at least until Eric Comrie is ready for NHL action.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Winnipeg sits 26th overall in goals against at 3.0 per game.
- Florida is 5-8-4 on the road and will face the Jets at the MTS Centre, where the home Winnipeg team is 8-6-1.
Free Florida Panthers vs. Winnipeg Jets NHL Hockey Prediction
The two teams sit 20th and 25th overall in goals per game, so expecting a low goal total may be prudent.
However, the Jets currently sit 26th overall in goals against at 3.0, significantly behind the Panthers mark of 2.7, which is good for 11th in the ranks.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Under 5.5
The Panthers have one for the worst power-plays in the entire NHL, sitting 30th overall with just a 12.6% efficiency rate. On the other hand, they own the 5th best penalty kill at 84.8%.
While they’re on the road, I expect them to try and play a tight-checking defensive game against the Jets, who sit 20th overall in goals for and 26th overall in goals against.
Look for Florida to try to get out to an early lead and then go into lead-protection mode.
