The Edmonton Oilers have gotten off to a strong start to the season, registering a 7-3-1 record in their first 11 games.
Some may say is a small sample size but it’s also almost 1/7th of the season in a league where every point matters, not matter when they are registered.
The Islanders, on the other hand, have had a tough go early on and there are now questions and minor controveries surrounding the team.
Agent, Alan Walsh, has publically stated how unpleased he is with the Isles continuing to keep three goalies on the roster, two of which are his clients.
Edmonton
The weight of the captaincy doesn’t appear to be weighing on young superstar, Connor McDavid, who was named as the youngest captain in league history this past off-season.
He currently sits at 13 points on the year, just one point back of the surprising league-leader, Artem Anisimov.
The noticable difference between the Oilers this year from years past is the addition of size and grit, as well upgrades on the backend.
Milan Lucic, Patrick Maroon, Zack Kassian, Adam Larsson, Darnell Nurse and Jesse Puljujarvi have all become rostered players for Edmonton and all are at least 6’3 and 200 lbs.

The leadership group has also changed in Edmonton, with McDavid taking on the “C” and by all reports, having the respect in the locker room due to his serious focus and obviously abilities.
Lucic was brought in with a Stanley Cup tital to his name and given an “A” in replace of the jettisoned Taylor Hall.
Cam Talbot has been a stud in net so far this season, which was a long-standing problem area for the Oilers. Fpor the year, Talbot has recorded a 2.31 GAA and a .927 SV%, which ranks amongst the top dozen in the league in SV%.
Talbot’s 7 wins lead the category and he’s also tied for 2nd in shutouts with two already.
Adam Larsson and Kris Russell have greatly improved the blueline for the Oil, logging important minutes and providing that calm presence and ability to make an efficient first pass to get out of their own zone, something that was lacking in the past.
The skating ability and size of Darnell Nurse is apparent, and he continues to develop into a nice NHL defenseman.
New York Islanders
Agent Alan Weiss, who handles both Jaroslav Halak and JP Berube, is not happy with the Isles picking up the highly saught after Berube off of waivers last season, just to watch him play 3rd fiddle to Halak and his backup and wasting away in limbo.
Berube cannot be sent down without being exposed on waivers, so he is in the same holding pattern as defenseman, Frank Corrado, who the Leafs claimed and have subsequently sat for half of a season last year and continued on the same path this one.
Halak is reportedly on the trading block, and performed admirably last game which may just boost his trade value. The issue may be his $4.5mm contract that limits potential suitors.
Garth Snow has made some nice moves to create a strong defensive unit in a time where seemingly every team is seasrching for top defenders.
He acquired Nick Leddy from Chicago, Thomas Hickey from LA and Johnny Boychuk from Boston, who have anchored the blueline for the Isles ever since the deals.
He’s been solid in identifying other teams’ second waves of talent that can take on a greater role.

Joining Tavares is the star player for the Islanders, and is tied for the team-lead in points with nine in 11 games played.
His cohert, Brock Nelson, is another strong young forward that shares the team lead in tallies and may be experiencing a legitimate breakout after a solid season last year.
The veteran signee, Andrew Ladd, was brought in to help offset the loses of Kyle Okposo and Frans Neilsen, but has just one point in 11 games so far in his Islanders career.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends

Free Edmonton Oilers vs New York Islanders NHL Hockey Prediction
I’m probably going to double dip on this game, as I like the Oilers squad to earn the road win in Brooklyn, but I also like the over here.
The Islanders allowed 42 shots last game and while they got a great performance out of Halak, it’s not every game you get a .950+ SV% on that many shots.

McDavid will likely face off against Boychuk, who will do his best to shut the phenom down, but McDavid’s elite speed makes in nearly impossible to contain him for long.
I like Edmonton’s depth more this year and think it may outpace that of the Islanders’.
