On the second night of a back-to-back after facing the Buffalo Sabres, the Detroit Red Wings head north to Canada to take on the Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal, with wins in six of its last eight games including Sunday’s victory over the Senators, will look to continue its strong play as it gets closer and closer to the playoffs in April.
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit has had a very rough and disappointing 2016-17 season. The team sits dead last in the weakest division – the Atlantic – in the National Hockey League and hasn’t shown much that would encourage Detroit fans heading into next season.
The Red Wings’ offense has been very poor, ranking 25th in the NHL in goals scored. Detroit averages just 2.46 goals per game and has just a single player with 20 or more goals on the season.

Tomas Tatar is the player. Tatar has 20 goals and 18 assists on the year, including five goals and three assists over the last five games.
Center Andreas Athanasiou has shown some signs of quality play for the Red Wings. In 55 games this season, he has 16 goals and 10 assists. Over his last five, he has two goals and three assists.
Defensively, the team has struggled as well. The Red Wings rank 23rd in goals against and give up an average of 2.96 goals per game.
Montreal Canadiens
Montreal has been the exact opposite of Detroit. The team sits atop the Atlantic Division and is surely heading to the playoffs with just 10 games left on its schedule. The defense has been extremely good for the Canadiens and the offense has shown some solid play as well.
Defensively, the Canadiens rank 8th in the league in goals against, giving up just 2.50 goals per game. Much of that has to do with the team’s goaltender, Carey Price. Price is 33-17-5 on the year with a 2.26 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.

Offensively, the team has been solid as well. The team ranks 14th in the league in goals, averaging 2.76 per game. The team is led by the goal-scoring of Max Pacioretty. Pacioretty has 33 goals and 27 assists, including two goals over his last five games.
Left wing Paul Byron has also been a good goal-scorer for the Canadiens. He has 20 goals and 17 assists, including four goals and two assists over his last five games.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Detroit is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 games
- Montreal is 9-2 SU in the last 11 games
Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Montreal Canadiens NHL Hockey Prediction:
Montreal is a much better team defensively than the Red Wings. At home, I like the Canadiens to take the W against a Red Wings team that hasn’t been able to limit good offenses.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Montreal ATS
Montreal shouldn’t have a tough time scoring against this Red Wings defense. In a game where the offense of Montreal also outmatches the offense of Detroit, the Canadiens should cover the spread.
