Two low-ranked teams meet in Raleigh, North Carolina in what could be considered a must-win for each team.
The Red Wings and Hurricanes are both struggling to stay relevant in their respective divisions and need every win they can get.
Detroit is coming off its first win in five games, a 6-4 win over Anaheim while Carolina is coming of its third win in the last five.
Detroit Red Wings
Not much has changed with this Detroit team over the last few weeks.
The Red Wings are still marred by injuries to key players including Justin Abdelkader and Tyler Bertuzzi, which has severly limited the team’s offensive production.
The Red Wings are currently 22nd in the league in goals scored (78) and had scored three total goals over their four-game losing streak, before the 6-4 game against the Ducks.
Dylan Larkin continues to be the top goal-scorer on the Red Wings. With 10 goals, he leads the team, but only has two over his last five games.
The defense stands in the middle of the NHL, 15th in goals against, and has 15 games where they have allowed two or less goals. The defense has some legs to stand on.
However, the offense needs to step up if the Red Wings are going to turn things around this year.

To win on the road, where Detroit is 7-5-1, the Red Wings will need to score. Defense alone won’t get it done, as is evident by a recent 1-0 loss to Philadelphia.
Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina hasn’t had much better luck than the Red Wings so far this year.
The Canes have shown signs of improvement, though, winning four of their last seven games. The goal production has slightly improved in the month of December.
However, Carolina is still just a paltry 17th in the NHL in goals. An 8-6 win over the Canucks was the height of the Canes’ goal scoring this season.
What has worked well has been the team defense. Ranked 12th in the league in goals against, the Hurricanes have allowed just 87 goals on the year, including a one-goal effort on Saturday night against the improved Buffalo Sabres.
It’s been a great year for Jeff Skinner, who has three goals and two assists in his last five games, giving him 12 and 14 on the year. He’s been a major factor in Carolina’s wins and is on pace for his best ever NHL season.

To beat the Red Wings, Carolina will have to find holes in their opponent’s defense and ensure that Dylan Larkin doesn’t get a lot of good looks at the net.
NHL Betting Trends:
- The OVER is 3-2-0 in Carolina’s last five games
- Detroit is 7-5-1 on the road this season
Free Detroit Red Wings vs. Carolina Hurricanes NHL Hockey Prediction:
The Red Wings simply aren’t very good. I like Carolina to take the W at home because of the solid team defense and Jeff Skinner’s ability to get shots on goal.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Carolina -135
Carolina has a better offense and can poke holes in the Red Wings’ defense. Carolina takes the W at home.
