The Oilers looks like a completely different team from a year ago, and frankly, they kind of are.
The new bodies in Edmonton have brought much more sandpaper and grit to the lineup and the young talent is flourishing with the size around them and an improved backend.
In Dallas, the start of the season has been the opposite, seeing the Stars off to a meager start to the tune of just 11 points in 13 games played.
Jamie Benn is not on his usual pace, but he is not to shoulder the blame as the team defense has been awful and the depth hasn’t been producing.
Dallas Stars
Dallas is on a swing through Alberta right now, beginning Thursday in Calgary then entering this game on back-to-back nights before heading to Vancouver.
The Alberta swing was once an easy four points in the Pacific, but that is not the case any longer as both of Calgary and Edmonton’s rebuilds have gone exceptional.
Dallas is coming into the trip on a three-game losing streak including a tough 8-2 defeat at the hands of Winnipeg on Tuesday night.
The Stars aer getting production from Tyler Seguin, who leads the team in points with 14, but Benn sits at nine and their depth hasn’t produced enough secondary scoring to offset the Captain’s slow start.
The defense in Dallas is suffering from the loss of the steady-handed Kris Russell, who they will face with his new club in Edmonton for the first time this season.
John Klingberg is an excellent offensive defenseman, but what the Stars will need to turn things around is better work in their own end and in net.

The Stars have a predicament in net, with both Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen owning save percentages in the .800’s. Niemi, .892 SV% and earn a combined salary north of $9-million.
The woes that hurt Dallas in the playoffs in the Spring have not been fixed and a change is going to be needed if they want to turn their fortunes around.
Edmonton Oilers
New comers Kris Russell, Adam Larsson, Milan Lucic, Jesse Puljujarvi and Patrick Maroon have been acquired in the past year and are paying immense dividends at the start of the 2016-17 season.
The forward depth is the calling card of the Oilers’ team, whereas the defensive issues were well-documented that caused GM Peter Chiarelli to make some major changes.
Russell and Larsson came by way of free-agency and trade, respectively, and both lead Edmonton’s revamped blueline that’s played a key role in ranking the team 14th overall in goals against at 2.5 on average.
The penalty kill is currently in 4th in the league, having an efficiency rate of 90.2% and helping Edmonton to a first place seeding in the Pacific Division.
Connor McDavid may be the best player in the league already and is just 19 years old.
The youngest captain in NHL history is now just one point behind Mark Scheifele for the NHL point lead.
Sheifele had a four-point night against Dallas Tuesday to jump to 1st place in category, so we’ll see McDavid’s response against the same opponent on Friday night.

Cam Talbot is tied for the league lead in wins with superstar, Carey Price, with eight each. Talbot has been nothing short of brilliant for a Oilers’ team that has longed for a solid goaltending situation for the past century.
On the year, Talbot has a 2.49 GAA and a .921 SV% to go along with his 8-4-1 record.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- McDavid is currently racking up points at an average a 1.21 points per game.
- Dallas’ only road win on the season came on October 18th in Nashville, and are 0-5 as visitors since then.
Free Dallas Stars vs Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey Prediction
Edmonton looks to be the real deal so far this year, and certainly hold the edge in this game with Dallas coming to their new home barn to play on the second night of a back-to-back.
While I like Edmonton to win, I like the over even more with the Oilers’ offensive firepower and the Stars porous defensive play.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Over 5.5.
As mentioned, Dallas ranks amongst the worst in the league at keeping the puck out of their net.
Their defensive group doe not instill much confidence that they’ll be able to shut down the force that is McDavid, nor the Oilers’ strong secondary scoring.
With Seguin and Benn in their lineup, they should at least be able to tally a few goals of their own to make the Over.
