New GM, John Chyka, took over their reigns of the Arizona Coyotes in the off-season and became the youngest GM in league history, at just 27-years old.
Chyka made a huge splash at the 2016 Draft, dealing for the pick to acquire the free-falling Jakob Chychrun, a massive defender who can skate and was considered a probable top-5 pick entering his draft-eligible junior season.
Chyka took on a couple bad contracts in the process to acquire assets to add to the young foundation of the franchise, with Chychrun along with fellow 1st rounder, Clayton Keller.
The moves project well for the future of the Coyotes, but have not been realized to date.
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado went through their own lengthy rebuilding process in recent memory, having top picks which they used on Nathan MacKinnon, Mastt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, and Nikita Zadorov.
The team now has a solid foundation that is growing under new head coach, Jason Bednar, who was a proven track record of winning at every level he’s coached at.
Under Bednar, Nathan MacKinnon and Matt Duchene appear to be rejuvenated, with each collecting a point-per-game thus far early on.
The same can be said for Patrick Wiercioch, a castoff from Ottawa who had one strong season there before falling out of favor… he now has five points in as many games as well.

The young forward corps in Denver is deep, especially with the additions of former first round picks Mikael Grigorenko and Joe Colborne, who are both big bodies with offensive upside and can play the middle, an important asset in the ever-difficult Western Conference.
While Seymon Varlamov isn’t particularly old and has been a steady starter the past couple of seasons for the Avs, the future in net may lay in Calvin Pickard, a former 2nd round pick and at just 24-years old, is entering his prime years.
Pickard has performed admirably in the AHL and his limited amount of NHL starts and holds a .903 SV% in his only game thus far.
Varlamov, 28, on the year owns a .902 SV% in his four starts with a 3.25 GAA.
Arizona Coyotes
As mentioned, the Coyotes forwards of the future look very promising, with a top-six that could shape up something like Max Domi, Anthony Duclair, Christian Dvorak, Dylan Strome, Lawson Crouse and Clayton Keller.
Their back-end has also been built young and strong, with the incumbent star, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, leading the charge.
Supplimenting Ekman-Larsson is the recently signed vetern, Alex Goligoski, along with Michael Stone, Chychrun, Connor Murphy and Luke Schenn.
Ekman-Larsson has scored five goals already in seven games this season, leading all NHL blueliners in this category. Last season, he led the Coyotes in scoring with 55 points, contributing 21 goals.

Mike Smith is the incumbent starter for the Arizona team, but is currently on the IR with a lower body injury. Therefore, the duties have been deferred to Louis Domingue and Justin Peters.
Neither of the two have a great GAA, with Peters’ sitting at 3.23 and Domingue’s at an awful 4.74.
Peters certainly appears to be the better play for Arizona while Smith it out, as he’s recorded a .914 SV% in his two starts, whereas Domingue has a .857 SV% across his five.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Arizona sits in last in the Western Conference with just four points in seven games.
- In 3 head to head matchups last season, Arizona won the series 2-1 and had a total goal differential of 7-6.
Free Colorado Avalanche vs Arizona Coyotes NHL Hockey Prediction
Only once did these two teams score over four goals in their three head-to-head games last season, but the two do both have some nice offensive pieces.
I like Colorado in this ame, despite being on the road, to earn the W in this game and keep Arizona’s early-season woes going.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Colorado Moneyline
The Avs hold the edge on both offense and in net with Smith being out, where the defense is likely a wash.
A rejuvenated MacKinnon and Duchene should be able to tack on some tallies to their respective point totals on the year against an Arizona team that currently ranks 30th in the league at goals against at 4.3 on average, and special teams that also rank amongst the worst.
