A pair of playoff outsiders in the Eastern Conference go head to head on Tuesday night.
But don’t turn the channel just yet, as this game may have more to offer than first meets the eye.
Carolina Hurricanes
When we say this game has more to offer than you might think at first glance, it starts with the fact that these are two teams riding nice streaks.
Starting with the Hurricanes, this team has won four straight and in pretty convincing fashion.
The Canes have outscored their opponents 12-4 over their last four games and that’s against a pretty solid group of teams. Carolina’s last four wins have come against Washington, San Jose, Montreal and Winnipeg.
Excluding the mediocre Jets, that’s a very solid group to go 4-0 against.
The Canes did however win all four of those games on home ice, and on the road this team has just two wins in nine tries, though four of those losses came in OT or shootout so they have earned eight points from nine road games this season.
A pretty non-descript group of players that is now without mainstay and captain Eric Staal, the Canes are led up front by Jeff Skinner (7G, 8A) who is having a resurgence this year, and youngster Victor Rask (8G, 7A).
Cam Ward at 32 years of age is having a solid start to the season as well with a 2.36 GAA and .916 SV%.
Toronto Maple Leafs
We come back to that theme of streaks and the Leafs have a nice little streak of their own going on home ice.
The Leafs have won their last three home contests, and perhaps more than that, they’ve been absolutely filling the net at the ACC.
Toronto has scored six goals in each of its last three home games and have outscored their opponents 18-6 in that stretch.
Carolina figures to be a little tougher defensively as they haven’t given up more than two goals once in their last four games, and these teams have a habit of playing tight-checking, close hockey games.
Take caution however, as betting on the Leafs based on history isn’t your best move this year as this is a completely different team playing a much different brand of hockey.
Either way though, the Leafs won the season series two games to one with Carolina last year, winning 2-1 (shootout), 3-1, and losing a 1-0 OT decision.
So even though the Leafs won that series, the Canes still came away with three points in three games.
This is a big game for Leafs rookie and first overall pick Auston Matthews as he hasn’t scored a goal since October 25, so coming up on a full month since his last goal he’s definitely going to be itching to get the monkey off his back.

Free Carolina Hurricanes vs. Toronto Maple Leafs NHL Hockey Prediction:
Both teams have streaks on the line here, the Canes with their four game win streak, the Leafs with their recent dominance during a three game home winning streak.
I think the Leafs coming off a hard-fought loss to the Canadiens on the weekend will have them primed to get back in the win column.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Maple Leafs
The Leafs have shown they can stick around in close games like they did in both of their games against Montreal this year but were unable to come away with points.
If the Canes insist on playing this one close I think the Leafs have the push to beat Cam Ward, who is not Carey Price.
If the Canes want to play wide open they could be in for a long night as this Leafs team is fast and scores in bunches.
