Two teams with sub-par starts do battle in the Gateway to the West; one team is meeting expectations while the other is falling short of them.
Carolina Hurricanes
The ‘Canes still have games to play when the front office isn’t salivating over the possibility of acquiring Toronto sniper William Nylander. When Carolina shipped former top 10 pick Noah Hanifin to Calgary for Dougie Hamilton, they showed their fans (what little of those there are) and they aren’t afraid of shaking things up.

The Hurricanes have an intriguing mix of young talent, led by Sebastian Aho (17 points), power forward Micheal Ferland (seven goals) and talented Finn Teuvo Teravainen (11 points).
Nylander would round out the goal-scoring on a young team, and they have a surplus of promising young D-men to deal to the Maple Leafs.
Until if and when that happens, Carolina must rely on its unheralded young talent’s continued development.
St. Louis Blues
The home team Blues haven’t looked good to start the 2018-19 season. Sure, it’s still early, but St. Lou is joining the L.A. Kings as a perennial playoff club that looks slow and outmatched thus far.
The veteran blueline duo of Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester has looked flat-footed throughout, and previous contributors like Jaden Schwartz have looked uninspired.

Blues head coach Mike Yeo could be out of a gig if he doesn’t turn the ship around.
St. Louis is relying heavily on vets, including acquisitions like Ryan O’Reilly from Buffalo and Tyler Bozak from Toronto; the NHL is such a speed game now, that if your team is on the slow side, you’re done. Hopefully the Blues aren’t learning that lesson the hard way this season.

Free Carolina Hurricanes vs. St. Louis Blues NHL Prediction:
The Blues have real problems keeping the puck out of their net so far this year; Aho, Ferland and white-hot Warren Foegele could capitalize on that on the road. St. Louis is probably too good for these struggles to continue for too long, but they might need some line juggling or maybe even a coaching change to pull the nose up on their season.
