A pair of Canadian rivals meet on Opening night as the Calgary Flames take on the Edmonton Oilers.
Both teams have a lot of talent to offer as they try to take a step in the right direction and find themselves in the postseason this year.
Calgary Flames
The Flames offseason could not have gone any better at a later time.
After a disappointing 2015-2016 campaign, the Flames were the biggest ones to make a splash in terms of locking in a star player. The Flames signed Johnny Gaudreau to a 6 year extension just a day before the season opener.

Johnny Gaudreau finished 6th in the NHL with 30 goals last season and in total finished with 78 points. He’s played such a giant role for this team that it was almost a must for them to resign him.
The problem for the Flames last year was their issues in net. Calgary had 4 different goalies they used and it really didn’t matter who was in goal.
Calgary ranked last in the NHL with 3.13 GAA in 2015-2016.
The Flames went out and tried to fix the issue, acquiring G Brian Elliott to a deal. Elliot led the league with a .930 SV%.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers finished in dead last in the Western Conference as this team has continued to get younger and younger.
It’s getting to the point this team needs to find some progress as they’ve held the 1st overall pick in 4 of the last 6 drafts.

2015 number 1 overall pick Connor McDavid is looking like he is the one who will have to turn this franchise around.
His rookie campaign was shortened by 37 games as he battled back from a collar bone injury. In his time in action, McDavid gave the Oilers a lot of hope when he did play.
McDavid finished with 16 goals and 32 assists and was named the youngest captain.
G Cam Talbot will certainly need a bounce back season after allowing 2.5 goals per game and ranking near the bottom in SV%.
