It’s Valentine’s Day so love is in the air, but there’s no love between these two Atlantic Division hockey teams. The Buffalo Sabres head to Ottawa to take on the Senators in the Canadian Tire Centre.
Buffalo, coming off a loss to Vancouver, will look to get a much-needed win against a good Ottawa Senators team.
Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo fans probably had some high hopes for this team coming into the season. Jack Eichel in his second year was poised to have a great season but injuries kept him out of the first two months of action.
The Sabres didn’t get off to a great start and haven’t been able to find their footing this season, even after Eichel’s return. The Sabres are 7th in the weak Atlantic Division and the playoff hopes are all but over at this point.

What’s gone wrong for Buffalo? Both sides of the ice, really. Buffalo can’t score consistently. The team averages just 2.4 goals per game, putting it 24th in the NHL in that category. And the defense hasn’t been much better. They give up over 2.8 goals per game.
Eichel has really been the lone bright spot for the club. In his 35 games this season, he has 13 goals and 16 assists. Over his last five games, he has a goal and five assists for Buffalo.
If the Sabres are going to beat the Senators, Eichel has to get going and generate the offense.
Ottawa Senators
Ottawa will be looking to contain Jack Eichel, eliminating the best offensive option that the Buffalo Sabres have. Look for the Senators to be successful in this, as the best part of this team is its defense.
Ottawa gives up 2.6 goals per game, good for 13th in the league and has given up just 143 goals on the season (6th in the NHL). The Sens have some quality defensemen in Dion Phaneuf, Eric Karlsson, and Cody Ceci, among others.
Offensively, the team is a bit more even matched with Buffalo. The Senators aren’t a great team on offense and are 21st in the league in goals scored.

Right wing Mark Stone has been the team’s best goal-scoring option, putting up 20 goals along with 21 assists. Over Stone’s last five games, he has four goals and an assist.
Center Kyle Turris and left wing Mark Hoffman have been solid goal-scorers, as well. They each have 18 goals on the year.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Buffalo is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 games
- The Total has gone UNDER in four of Ottawa’s last five games
Free Buffalo Sabres vs. Ottawa Senators NHL Hockey Prediction:
Ottawa is a much better team defensively than the Sabres. At home, I like the Senators to take the W against a Sabres team that can’t really score.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Ottawa ML
The Senators have a big edge on defense and have been playing extremely good hockey lately. The Ottawa money line is a good pick here.
