After a few days of rest for the Christmas holiday, the Sabres are back on the road in Detroit to take on the Red Wings on Tuesday night.
These bottom two teams in the Atlantic Division are struggling to stay relevant in the playoff race, but Buffalo’s season could be over before too long if the Sabres can’t win more games.
Buffalo Sabres
After looking promising through Jack Eichel’s first five games of the season, the Sabres have returned to their losing ways and have dropped four straight games, including a terrible 5-1 loss to the New York Islanders.
Check out the free sports picks from Cappers Picks experts today!
In those four games, the Sabres only scored six goals and Eichel didn’t register a single point. It looks as though, if Eichel can’t get on the score sheet, the Sabres don’t have much of a chance to win games.
Ranked second to last in goals scored (79), Buffalo just doesn’t have enough offensive firepower to compete with these better teams. Three out of the last four games, Buffalo didn’t score more than once, which led to bad losses against beatable teams like Carolina and the Islanders.
If Buffalo wants to stay relevant in the Atlantic Division, it’s going to have to start with figuring out how to put the puck in the net. The defense has been decent this year but it’s not going to matter if the Sabres keep having one-goal efforts.
Detroit Red Wings
Currently seventh in the Atlantic, the Red Wings are looking to chip away at the point defecit that separates them from the top 5 in the division.
Unfortunately for Detroit, the team injury list continues to get longer and longer. Justin Abdelkader, Tyler Bertuzzi, John Franzen, Mike Green, Jimmy Howard, the list really goes on and on. There’s no consistency on the four lines and the Red Wings are having a hard time filling in for these missing players.
The good news is that Detroit is still in the race and the team has been getting some fantastic play from center Frans Nielsen. With two goals and two assists in his last five games, Nielsen has been everything Detroit needed him to be.

With good play from Dylan Larkin, Thomas Vanek, and Henrik Zetterberg, there is still hope for the Red Wings. But they’ll have to get off to a good start Tuesday night, coming off the holiday break.
NHL Betting Trends:
- Buffalo is 4-1 ATS in last five games on the road
- Detroit is 7-9-3 at home this season
Free Buffalo Sabres vs. Detroit Red Wings NHL Hockey Prediction:
Buffalo is second to last in goals this season. The team is showing that they can’t stick around in games if they start giving up too many goals. Detroit should get the W at home.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Detroit -133
Detroit is a better team offensively. When Buffalo can’t score multiple goals, the team can’t win. This should be a good win for the Red Wings.
