What a heavyweight battle this one is. Psyche! This is probably the least attractive matchup on the Friday night NHL schedule as a pair of teams that are just running out the clock will meet.
The Canes are on a three game losing skid and are 2-5-3 over their last 10. They Coyotes aren’t much better as they’re 5-5-0 through their last 10 and just bid farewell to top six forward Martin Hanzal.
Carolina Hurricanes
The Canes have been one of the worst teams in the league over the past few weeks with just two wins to show in their last 10 games. The Canes are plagued by an inability to score goals of late, as they’ve scored more than two goals just once in their last nine games.
In that stretch, the Hurricanes have been shutout twice and held to just a single goal three times.
Some positives can perhaps be taken from their last game out where they did manage to score three goals against the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 4-3 OT loss. This team does have some young talent that has some growing to do, but the Canes still look like they’re a few years away.

Defenceman Noah Hanifin is hitting the sophomore slump this season, as the 2015 fifth overall pick has notched just three goals and 15 assists and is a -21 on the year.
Sebastian Aho has been a pleasant surprise this year, as the 2015 second round pick has found the net 18 times and tallied 17 assists, for a total of 35 points in his rookie season
The 19-year-old Finnish forward looks like one that the Canes can build around going forward, and if not for an astounding 2016-17 rookie class, Aho could have been in the Calder Trophy discussion this season.
Arizona Coyotes
Arizona looks destined for a top three pick in this summer’s entry draft, as they’ve been firmly planted at 29th in the NHL for quite some time now.
Finding positives in this team is a bit of a task, as there have been few bright spots. The team faltered at deadline day by not moving 35-year-old Radim Vrbata, who leads the team in scoring.
[dfads params=’groups=234&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Vrbata is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, and in all likelihood will walk for nothing.
The Coyotes could have at least scooped up a prospect or a handful of picks for Vrbata from a team making a playoff push, but instead he will finish the season in Arizona.
There are some solid, young pieces on this roster in the form of Max Domi, Christian Dvorak, Tobias Rieder and Jakob Cychrun, but at this point they all appear to be parts of a bigger machine, as not one as shown that they can anchor the squad.
This year’s draft is a big one for the Coyotes as they desperately need a cornerstone-type player to build around going forward.
