Well the good news is that one of these two teams will finally record a tally under the win column for the young season. It’s been a slow start for both franchises, thought still early on, as both rank amongst the bottom in Goals-for and powerplay percentages.
Anaheim Ducks
Anaheim has an aging core of stars, with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry now into their 30’s and seemingly having slowed slightly on the scoresheet.
This isn’t to say that they aren’t still good players, quite the opposite really, but the Ducks are hoping that the drafting and development of young players can help offset the scoring presence.
The drafting and development of players such as Nick Ritchie and Nick Sorensen certainly should help in the long-run, both big bodies that have offensive upside.
Missing the still-unsigned RFA, Richard Rakell, certainly hurts their depth, as the young pivot has developed into a nice secondary option with 20 goals and 23 assists last season as a 22-year old.
He, along with Ritchie, may be the heir apparents to Getzlaf and Perry once the torch is ready to be passed.

John Gibson was drafted to be the netminder of the future, and the future is now as the team dealt away Fredrick Andersen in the off-season to give Gibson the bulk of the starts.
He’s started two of Anaheim’s three games thus far but has a .860 SV% and 3.59 GAA thus far early on.
Jonathan Bernier comes to the Ducks’ as his back-up, who in his one start has a .933 SV% and is looking to redeem himself after a tough season in Toronto in 2015-16.
Bernier is currently set to become a free agent at year-end and would like to re-establish himself as a starter going forward.
New Jersey Devils
The big off-season story for the Devils’ was the acquisition of Taylor Hall, who was acquired for defenseman Adam Larsson in what appears to have been highway robbery for New Jersey.
After multple 20-goal seasons in Edmonton, Hall is considered one of the elite young wingers in the game and is just 24-years of age and entering his prime.
He has yet to record a point in his two-game career with the Devils, but already has two seasons to his name of averaging better than a point-per-game, so this should change soon.
Leading the charge so far is P.A. Parenteau and his two points, which lead a Devils’ team that’s currently ranked 29/30 in goals per game at 1.5 on average, in each of goals (1), assists (1) and points (2).

Cory Schneider is the star franchise player in New Jersey, as the young netminder is one the premier goalies in the entire league.
Schneids is a large part of the reason why NJ is 8th overall in goals against at 2.5, and 1st overall on the penalty-kill with a perfect 100% rate.
Losing Larsson certainly creates a hole on the back-end, but other young defenders such as Jon Merrill and Damon Severson now have an opportunity to step into a more prominent role.
NHL Hockey Handicapping Trends
- Taylor Hall has a career ppg average of .856 li>
- Anaheim won both matchups between the two teams last season, with a total goal differential of 9-2.
Free Anaheim Ducks vs. New Jersey Devils NHL Hockey Prediction
While neither team has scored a whole lot, as evidenced by their rankings of 27th and 29th overall in goals per game, respectively, I like Anaheim’s offense to outpace the Devils’.
Taylor Hall will be keyed on by opposing defenders which will make it tough to get space for him to wheel, as there is a lack of secondary scoring behind him.
4* Free NHL Betting Pick: Anaheim Moneyline.
Seems like a safe enough bet that the road Anaheim team will be able to outduel this Devils team.
Even without Rakell in the lineup, the Ducks’ forwards hold a significant edge in both top-end talent and depth amongst their lineup.
While I think Schneider is a most established goalie and certainly holds an edge, Anaheim’s defense is better than NJ’s and he will likely see a barrage of rubber coming his way.
Gibson is still a good young netminder and should be able to aid his stat line against the dearth of offense the Jersey has displayed.
