Patriots vs. Eagles Preview – Superbowl 52 Outlook
Rob Gronkowski is listed on the injury report and still in concussion protocol as of Monday but it would be shocking if he didn’t play. He will obviously play a huge role in the offense as he typically does but this will be a particularly good matchup for him against an Eagles defense that struggles to cover tight ends.

The Eagles were 17th in the NFL during the regular season covering tight ends. This is the weakest part of a pretty strong passing defense.
With the Eagles sporting the best rush defense in the NFL, I would doubt that the Patriots intend on taking the ball out of the hands of Brady and relying on their group of backs to find a way through that top ranked rush defense.
However, expect the running backs to be heavily involved. Both Dion Lewis and James White have been great catching the ball out of the backfield which adds to the Patriots already deep group of pass catchers.
Danny Amendola has emerged into a bigger role over the last several weeks and has shown he’s capable of being last season’s playoff version of Julian Edelman.

With Gronk and Amendola roaming the middle of the field, Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan running out wide, and the two backs flying out of the backfield, Brady will have plenty of options.
I would expect the Patriots to run 70-75% pass plays and allow their future Hall of Fame quarterback to be the difference maker. The alleged way to beat Brady is to get pressure on him so you could see some quick short throws if the Eagles start to get pressure up the middle.

Patriots vs. Eagles Handicapping – Superbowl 52 Outlook
You simply do not shutdown Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. This offense in its current form has far too many weapons to be completely shut down. The key though is to pick and choose where you are going to try to neutralize and hope that doing so will disrupt their rhythm.
Malcolm Jenkins is the leader of this Eagles defense and his responsibilities – outside of being the veteran leadership on the field – will include covering the Patriots running backs and their All-Pro tight end Rob Gronkowski.
It is a tall task for a single player to do either of those so Jenkins obviously won’t be alone but he will likely spend the majority of his effort on that group.
Chris Long and Brandon Graham have been the Eagles two best edge rushers – particularly of late. Graham is battling an ankle sprain lingering from the regular season but both have continued to disrupt the quarterback. If they can get to Brady without a need to blitz, the Eagles defense will be much better off.
Lastly, the weakest part of the Eagles defense will be a key to watch: inside linebacker. They have been completed depleted by injury at the position but they will need good games out of whoever lines up there.

They will share some responsibility of Gronkowski and the running backs so they will have to be strong in coverage (see Kyle Rudolph’s opening TD from last week where they were NOT strong in coverage).
Patriots vs. Eagles Handicapping – Superbowl 52 Preview
The edge here goes to New England but it is closer than you may think. There is Brady and the list of weapons that I rattled off but the Eagles defense does not get enough respect. They have a terrifying group up front that gets in the backfield and their secondary has shown that they can make plays. I expect Cooks and Hogan to be neutralized.
Gronk and the running backs will be the key cogs but the Eagles have the players such as Jenkins and Rodney McLeod that could be disruptive. Brady against the creative and confident defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will be the best matchup to watch in this Super Bowl.
