Patriots vs Eagles Preview – Superbowl 52 Outlook
Relying on a heavy dose of the run-pass option, Foles has completed 78 percent of his passes in the Eagles two playoff wins. He has been efficient in the two games – averaging 9.5 yards per attempt with zero interceptions on 63 pass attempts. He has spread the ball around – completing 49 passes to 9 different receivers. He has only taken two sacks and he has not lost a fumble.

Many people thought the Eagles would rely heavily on Ajayi and the other running backs to lead the offense in order to take the pressure off of Foles.
That has not at all been the case with Foles’ 63 pass attempts in two games to only 62 total rushing attempts. But they still will use the run game and Ajayi will need to pick up some big chunks here and there to keep the defense honest.
Bill Belichick and the Patriots defense usually operate by making their opponent beat them with their secondary options. This Eagles offense is very well balanced but I expect the Pats to key on Alshon Jeffery and Zach Ertz.
This will force the Eagles to be productive with their other receivers which puts the pressure on Agholor and Smith.

They will find themselves open often during this game so they will to have avoid drops (ex. Smith virtually every week) and they will have chances to make big plays after the catch.

Patriots vs Eagles Preview – Superbowl 52 Outlook
The Patriots defense finished the season tied for 7th in the NFL with 42 sacks so they likely will get pressure on Foles. That will be a key for the defense because last week Foles had more time to throw and was able to get the ball down field a few times for big plays – an area that New England has been vulnerable.
The Patriots had the 8th best defense in the NFL when it came to not allowing touchdowns after the opposing offense had entered the red zone. That will be huge to maintain for the Patriots as they would feel much more comfortable forcing rookie kicker Jake Elliott to beat them.
The X-factor for New England will be their defensive line – particularly Van Noy and Flowers. They will need to get pressure on Foles and allow the defense to drop 6 or 7 into coverage to take away the short passing routes.

The Eagles allowed the 7th most quarterback hits during the regular season – nearly 7 per game. But they have only allowed a total of 9 in the two playoff games so it will be crucial for the Pats up front to find a way to get pressure.
Stephon Gilmore has been playing very well lately and this matchup against Jeffery is when they need him most. If he can take away Jeffery, the Pats can use the rest of their scheme to get pressure and slow down Ertz.
Gilmore likely won’t make the big plays that could get him a Super Bowl MVP award but for the Patriots defense to play well, Gilmore will have to have his best game in a Patriots uniform.
Patriots vs Eagles Preview – Superbowl 52 Preview
I give the edge here to New England but only slightly. With two weeks to prepare, I expect them to schematically be prepared for Foles. They will have in place creative ways to get pressure and take away the short routes on the run-pass option.
But they have given up lots of yards all season long, so it will come down to red zone play. This is where their preparation and scheme will provide them with the upper hand – forcing the Eagles and Doug Pederson to make decisions on 4th downs in the red zone.
