The Chargers barely lost out on home field advantage, despite finishing the regular season with as many wins as any in the AFC.

Just maybe it was for the best. One of the best road teams in the NFL during the regular year, LA toppled Baltimore in the Wild Card Round on Sunday to set up a matchup with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick at Gillette Stadium.
Los Angeles Chargers
Part of the reason the Chargers didn’t finish with the top seed in the AFC was their 22–10 loss to Baltimore in Week 16. They made the adjustments and sent Lamar Jackson home with a 23–17 win.
The Chargers can win a game many different ways but the victory over Baltimore should be most credited to the defense. The Ravens didn’t score in the first half and had just three points going into the fourth quarter. They ran for 69 yards in the first half and 229 in the game, which may sound like a lot but both numbers were below the norm with Jackson in there.

Michael Crabtree caught two touchdowns in the last 6:33 for Baltimore, once Michael Badgley had already hit five field goals and helped his team build a 23–3 lead. Los Angeles’ place kicker finished the day 5-for-6.
No one put up huge numbers on the LA offense but Phillip Rivers only went down once and expressed confidence heading into Gillette after the game.
“We’ve been to London. We’ve been everywhere on the road and won; and we’ve won with defense; we’ve won with offense; we’ve won with kick returns; we’ve won with field goals.”
And he’s right. The Chargers have won seven road games in a row. It’s also been eleven years since Rivers last met Brady and the Patriots in the playoffs. That was the 2007-2008 AFC Championship game, a game the Patriots won to get to 18–0 and the infamous Super Bowl against the Giants.
Eleven years later, Rivers will bring back a completely new set of teammates and coaches, representing a different city for the same franchise against the same old guard.
New England Patriots
The Patriots enter this game seemingly a little more vulnerable than in years past, though I am certainly not the first person to make such a statement.
New England lost five games this season, though all five were on the road. The Patriots are a perfect 8–0 at home this season. Moreover, they had the week to rest and get healthy.
Devin McCourty suffered a concussion in Week 17 and is in protocol. He, along with Cordarrelle Patterson, are questionable for this game.

This is going to be a fine game. I’m happy the Chargers were the winners because they will provide a much tougher test than Baltimore would have in New England.
I also can’t help but look big picture and see New England at home, off the bye, relatively healthy and having played in seven consecutive conference championships.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: it goes under.
I do like the Pats. But I like the Chargers, too, somehow. It feels like this team was destined to go on the road and make some noise, considering the homefield they have available to them.
But I’ve got the same line as the books. I’m going to stay away from the sides and play the total, which I think is about three or four points too high. Defense has become the strength of both these teams.
