The Indianapolis Colts are the most talked about team heading into the new season in the AFC after the shocking news of Andrew Luck’s retirement.
Pundits and Vegas oddsmakers are trying to decide if the Colts are still players in what appears to be a wide open AFC South.
Indianapolis was immediately behind the Chiefs and Patriots in the AFC futures market before the news of Lucks retirement.
Now, it’s the Chargers who have the third-best odds of winning the conference at 7/1. The Colts have been relegated to a long shot at 30/1.
Indianapolis Colts
There is no denying Andrew Luck was one of the best football players in the league before he decided to retire and get away from the “dark place” in his mind that the strain of the NFL has taken on him.

First and foremost, we hope Luck gets well and goes on to a productive career in whatever he decides to pursue.
The Colts have lost a tremendous football player and leader but they were one of the most prepared teams for something like this to happen to with Jacoby Brissett available as a backup.
Brissett doesn’t have the accuracy Luck had but he is smart, mobile, and an esteemed leader with a ton of respect in the Colts’ clubhouse.
When you hear teammates and coaches talk about Brissett you get the feeling these Colts are ready to rally around their new starting quarterback.
It certainly doesn’t hurt that Brissett has one of the most complete rosters around him, from a top defense to a terrific offensive line and depth at all the skill positions.
Indianapolis doesn’t have the fantasy value it had before Luck called it quits but I now look at this team as a live ‘dog that can still most certainly win the division and challenge in the AFC playoffs.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers, however much they may be priced as contenders, could be in for a disappointing year. Their season came crashing down in the playoffs last season against the Patriots after winning 12 games in the regular season and then topping Baltimore in that ugly Wild Card weekend game.
#melvingordon I'm not sure what the San Diego Chargers are doing at this point. Is Ekeler really enough to replace Gordon if he "Bolts"? #punintended Weigh in…

There are issues on the offensive line and no Melvin Gordon to run behind it, at least not yet.
Gordon has held out all offseason and into training camp and it was recently reported that the Chargers have granted him the freedom to seek a trade during the impasse. He’ll explore his options, which could include returning.
He did reportedly have an offer from the Chargers that would pay him around $10 million annually but is looking for more.

Gordon was a two-way fiend in LA’s offense a year ago and presumably his workload will go to Austin Ekler, who has big fantasy value going into this game, even against a tough Colts’ defense.
I suspect LA’s offense will take a back seat to its defense this season, however much Phillip Rivers is still there throwing the ball into tight windows and staying upright in the pocket.
He’s been a tremendous quarterback for more than 10 years now and he always gives the Chargers a chance as long as he leads the team out there.
Given the questions on both offenses and the strong defensive units, I’m not surprised this total just approaches the mid-40s. It could stand to be even a bit lower, in fact.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: under 44 and Colts with the points.
I’m not sure either team will get to 20 in this one. And if one does crack 23 or 24, it should be good enough to win. I’m thinking both sides play it conservatively in Week 1, run the ball a lot and we see 40 points, max.
More so than the under, I like the Colts. This is going to be a sneaky good team with a solid foundation in place to overcome the late loss of Luck.
They are getting 6.5 or 7.0, depending on where you’re betting and the payout you desire.
