Matthew Stafford has had a rebirth in his career under Jim Bob Cooter and it is happening when Stafford arguably has his fewest weapons.
However, he will be up against the league’s best defense who is hoping to use the 2015 Denver Broncos formula to make their way to the Super Bowl.
Detroit Lions
Stafford faced one of the league’s best passing defenses last week in Houston and struggled to put up the numbers that he’s been putting up this season.

Stafford’s weapons have been minimized this season with the retirement of Calvin Johnson and virtually a complete wipeout of the Lions backfield due to injury.
Theo Riddick returned last week against Houston but Stafford has been dealing with a different backfield from week to week.
Stafford will need him and all of Detroit’s offense to be at their best in this matchup with Minnesota.
Stafford is 4th in the NFL in completion percentage but will be up against Minnesota who is 2nd in the NFL on opposing quarterback completion percentage – allowing quarterbacks to complete just 55.7 percent of passes against them.

On the flip side, Detroit’s defense has been one of the league’s worst against the pass – which should help the struggling Sam Bradford.
However, Minnesota’s offensive line is depleted so the Detroit will need to put pressure on Bradford. Philadelphia did that two weeks ago and Bradford looked lost all game long.
Stafford will certainly have to make plays – he has proven he can do that – but it will be up to the Detroit defense to create some turnovers and help Stafford out with some short fields or even points on the board.
Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota was the league’s longest lasting undefeated team but fell and fell hard to Philadelphia two weeks ago. The Vikings looked completely incompetent on offense and thus had no shot of winning the football game.
That continued this week against the struggling Bears as Bradford and the offense were hardly able to get anything going on offense.
While Bradford has certainly been off a little bit, the offensive line is in shambles. They are doing nothing to protect Bradford and are having a difficult time paving the way for the run game.
It doesn’t matter how great the defense is if the offense can’t be productive. The Bears were able to score 20 points and gain 403 yards of offense – both well above the averages the Vikings had been allowed coming in.
The Vikings going 2-13 on third down allowed the Bears to gain good field position and wear down Minnesota’s defense.
A short week could make it challenging to fix those offensive line problems, however, they will be up against a weak Detroit defense.

They do have 18 sacks though so their weak secondary can be protected if Minnesota allows them to get pressure on Bradford.
The league’s best defense this season could all go to waste if the Vikings can’t find a way to protect their quarterback.
After two straight losses, the NFC North is wide open again and the Lions will have a chance to creep closer if they are able to get after Bradford the same way the Bears and Eagles did.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Minnesota has scored 25 or fewer points in 5 of 6 games this season.
- Detroit has scored 20+ points in 5 of 8 games this season.
- Detroit has 18 sacks this season.
- Minnesota has allowed 11 sacks in the last two weeks.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Detroit +6.0
Watching Minnesota the last two weeks will tell you more than any betting trends.
I am not sure if Stafford will be able to do enough to pick up this road divisional win but I like Detroit’s chances to keep this close and I definitely don’t trust Minnesota’s offense to do enough to cover 6 points.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Detroit 21 – Minnesota 20
The pass rush of Detroit could prove to be the difference while Stafford doesn’t seem afraid of any defense – no matter how good they may be.
