The Seahawks begin their season at home and against what has been one of the worst teams in football of late. It will be a good opportunity to start this season optimistically and give the fans reason to believe their team can re-conquer the Rams in the division.
The Bengals, meanwhile, have to go on the road to the Twelfth Man in Zach Taylor’s first season as the Head Coach. He took over after Marvin Lewis and Cincinnati finally parted ways after last season.
Cincinnati Bengals
Johnson inherits a team that has finished below .500 in each of the last three seasons and is coming off a six-win, last place finish in the AFC North.

It isn’t all bad, though. Andy Dalton is a proven starting quarterback who can deliver the ball where it needs to be, when it needs to be there. Joe Mixon has as much talent as any runner in the NFL, save perhaps Saquon Barkley and Ezekiel Elliott. Tyler Eifert is healthy for now and Tyler Boyd is a good looking young receiver.
Let’s just say the defense has room for improvement. We can say the same about the offensive line. Then there’s the fact that the Bengals are playing in what is possibly the toughest division in football and certainly the best in the AFC. Six of their 16 games will come against the Ravens, Steelers, and Browns.
AJ Green is also out for a while after suffering an ankle injury. He is expected to miss the first month, or so, of the season. Fortunately, Cincinnati’s first three games are all out of the division.

It the Bengals can get a few wins early on, Green would only provide more of a lift when divisional play begins.
Seattle Seahawks
After three first place finishes in four seasons, Seattle has finished behind Los Angeles in consecutive seasons in the NFC West.
Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson are still there. Chris Carson is back for another big year running the ball, which Seattle promises to do a lot, and the defense still has that culture that demands respect from any opponent, though it was a down season a year ago.
The ‘Hawks may miss their rookie WR DK Metcalf in this game as he recovers from knee surgery. Even if Metcalf is ready, he won’t be a big impact so early in his rookie year.
Fantasy-Wise, I like Tyler Lockett a lot this season and I especially like him right off the bat in Week 1, where Russell Wilson will need targets against a porous Bengals’ defense. Lockett will be available and ready to catch six, seven, eight balls and probably score in this game. I’m starting him in any and all formats.
I’m not sure the Seahawks are going to be able to bring anything much new and exciting to the table this year.
The offense will score points and they’ll win games, especially at home. It’s a tough Rams team and NFC conference as a whole that they are dealing with, though. Better get this one.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Over is 7-2 in CIN last 9 games in Week 1.
- SEA are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall.
- Under is 9-3 in SEA last 12 games in September.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Seattle wins and covers.
It’s tempting just to go with the Bengals because they have the points in Week 1, which usually helps a little more than later in the season, and the new coach will have the team’s adrenaline pumping.
I see it staying close in the first half and then Seattle using its savvy to open things up a little bit in the second.
For that reason, I’d wait it out and look to play this one at halftime, pending whatever I see along the way in the first 30 minutes.
NOTE Right At Presstime This News Dropped: Texans have finalized a multi-player trade with the Seahawks that will send Clowney to Seattle. In exchange for Clowney, the Seahawks will be sending Barkevious Mingo, Jacob Martin and a 2020 third-round draft pick to Houston, according to MMQB.com. From what I can see the line hasn’t moved much more than a 1/2 point at a few sportsbooks online.
Scoopage: SEA & HOU have agreed to trade parameters re: Jadeveon Clowney contingent upon Clowney & other players involved passing physicals. Still lot of moving parts but believed Clowney, who rejected going to Miami at first, is headed for his physical with Hawks. @NFLONFOX
