The standings have been wiped clean and the first NFL Sunday of the year kicks off with seven games at 1:00 pm, including Atlanta at Minnesota.
This should be a fun one. Both of these teams came into last season with high expectations that neither quite met. Neither team has changed all that much and both are Super Bowl contenders in the minds of certain prognosticators.
Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons flopped last season, finishing 7–9. They showed flashes of what made them near Super Bowl Champions the season before and what led many to believe they would be back.

They just couldn’t perform that way consistently, despite another healthy and productive season from Matt Ryan.
Ryan started all 16 games, completed nearly 70 percent of his passes and threw 35 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. The Falcons’ passing attack was a top-5 unit just about across the board.
The running game couldn’t keep up. Devonta Freeman only played in two games and carried the ball 14 times before giving way to a groin injury that required surgery after initially injuring his foot.
He’s entering the third year of a four-year deal that made him the highest-paid running back before the Super Bowl season and expectations are that he’ll be healthy and productive once again.
So Atlanta’s offense looks like it should be top notch, though it did bring in Dirk Koetter to coordinate the unit after Steve Sarkisian a year ago.
The defense, however, is coming off of a terrible season in which it ranked 30th in points allowed per possession and possession length, both in terms of number of plays and time of possession.

The pass and run defense were equally to blame. Atlanta’s defense begins the year healthy, though.
Some think that Dan Quinn, despite being so highly thought of just a year ago, could be on the hot seat if the defense flops again and Atlanta fails to get back to the playoffs. For now, that’s only speculation.
Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings come into the season with just about a clean bill of health, too. Holton Hill, a backup corner who started three games and played in all 16 as a rookie a year ago failed a drug test and won’t be eligible to return until Week 9.
Hard for a fringe guy to bounce back after a mistake like that.
Offensively, Minnesota is re-charged and completely healthy. Kirk Cousins may be the most scrutinized quarterback in the league. He started all 16 games a year ago, threw for nearly 4,300 yards, tossed 30 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions, but won just eight games.
#NFL Week 1 Sunday action sees the #Falcons visiting the #Vikings. The line opened at Vikings -4.5 O/U 47.5. We're now seeing the line at -4 and O/U 47.5. What side are you on for this one?

Some Vikings fans are already questioning his toughness and intangibles after just one year in Minnesota. It’s what comes with the territory of signing the sort of contract he signed a year ago.
John DeFilippo is out and Kevin Stefanski is in. He played in the Ivy League at Penn and joined the Vikings in 2006 as a 24-year-old under Brad Childress. He served as a special assistant, a quarterbacks coach, a tight ends coach, and a running backs coach before working directly under DeFilippo as the intern offensive coordinator.
The “interim” tag was removed after the Vikings scored just the 19th-most points in the league last season.
He’ll be happy to have Dalvin Cook back and healthy. It’s been two lost seasons for the running back but he’s healthy now and has looked explosive. He’s going to be the focal point of this offense.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Minnesota.
I’d recommend buying half a point so you don’t lose by the hook in a field goal game. The Falcons are a talented team but I like Minnesota’s outlook this season with Cook healthy. At home, I have to lean toward the Vikings.
