Below are the top five tips for new Super Bowl Bettors:
Don’t Look at Just The Payout
This is advice for all first-time bettors, not just first-time Super Bowl bettors—and even seasoned gamblers, if we’re being honest.

Although it may be tempting to put down money on something that pays out at +500, +800, +1300, etc., you’d better feel very good about your reasons for placing a bet beyond just “it could make me a lot of money.” That’s where new bettors get into trouble.
For the record, there’s nothing wrong with making a bold pick. But again, have your football reaons, or your trends in mind. Don’t look just at the money in the end. Otherwise, you’ll likely be looking at no money when it’s all said and done.
Bet Tails
One of the most popular prop bets every year, Tails Never Fails. Or, more accurately, tails has been the correct choice in 52 percent of all Super Bowls.
No, this doesn’t leave a huge margin for error—hence the 50/50 dynamic of a coin toss, whether in the Super Bowl or everyday life.
But if you’re feeling like dipping a toe in the water of betting on the Super Bowl, the coin toss is the perfect appetizer, and tails has historically been the correct choice.
Do Your Research
Although it may be more fun for casual bettors to put money down on a whim in between timeouts or every time it’s time to replace an adult beverage (more on that later, by the way), it’s always best to know what you’re getting yourself into ahead of time.
If you want to make a halftime bet on second-half scoring, look up how the team in mind performed throughout the regular season in third and fourth quarters. Thinking about the over/under (another very popular betting choice, especially among beginners), make sure you know how both offenses performed this year against similar defenses.

The occasional small bet out of impulse isn’t a bad thing as long as the money you’re putting down isn’t going to get you in trouble if you never see it again. But keep those to a minimum.
Don’t Be Emboldened By Beverages
Without getting preachy or into the “life advice” section, this is worth mentioning for first-timers.
Alcohol makes us feel good. That’s part of the appeal. But it also gives us a sense of confidence we may not otherwise have; a confidence that can empower us to make decisions that are unwise.
If you’re keeping your impulse bets to a minimum (as previously advised), this will be less of a problem. But while historical trends and research are great tools to making bets, feeling extra confident because of your fourth gin and tonic or microbrew won’t make the odds of you betting correctly any better.
Again, you do you. But keep this in mind as you’re watching the game with money burning a hole in your pocket.
Set a Limit
This is another tip that falls into the category of good-sense betting advice for anyone, first-time bettors or seasoned vets. But it’s an important one.
Going into the Big Game, set a limit for how much you’re going to bet pre-game and how much you’re going to bet in-game.

Without a limit, it can be very easy to get way too excited by your victories along the way. It’s also possible—and far more detrimental—to feel you need to play a bit of catch up from early Ls.
Set a limit, stick to it, and don’t worry if you end up over or under for the day. Make this about the experience, not the outcome. If you can’t do that, it may be best to stay away altogether.
