They won five games, about four or five more wins than people thought they would win. They assume they have their quarterback for the future and some key pieces that will be with them for the future, as well.

2018 New York Jets Predictions: Roster Changes
The big headline grab was drafting Sam Darnold. While he may not start day one, he’s supposed to represent the future for the New York Jets. Darnold, essentially, fell to three and the Jets rolled the dice.
The Jets were also busy in the free agent market signing quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to compete with, at the time, Josh McCown, but he’ll obviously have to compete with Darnold, as well.
Trumaine Johnson was the biggest impact signing the Jets made. Johnson is a true number one cornerback that can take away one side of the field. That’s a huge boost and slotting Morris Claiborne as their number two cornerback adds depth to their secondary.

The hope is that Spencer Long will give their offensive line a much needed boost. The offensive line was poor and sticking Long at center could help the line become more stabilized.
Out wide, the Jets signed Terrelle Pryor. While he was a bust for the Washington Redskins, the Jets are hoping that his talent and new offensive system will be the key for Pryor to getting back on track.
Plus, Pryor isn’t counted on to be the man. The Jets have plenty of depth on the outside.
The Jets also signed Thomas Rawls and Isaiah Crowell who will compete for reps and Avery Williamson will look to make an impact starting in the middle of the defense at linebacker.
The Jets did lose a couple of key pieces from last year. Kony Ealy left for free agency. Ealy was an impact player on the defensive line, as well as Demario Davis and Muhammad Wilkerson.
Overall, it was a positive offseason for the Jets. They addressed their needs, they didn’t overpay for Davis and instead they brought in Wilkerson who is younger and cheaper.
2018 New York Jets Predictions: Offense
First things, first. The Jets have to pick a quarterback to start.
Josh McCown starting probably gives the Jets best chance to win now. Bridgewater could pay off he shows he is healthy and can knock off the rust of not playing competitively for virtually for two years.
If Darnold starts, there will be growing pains and plenty of mistakes which could be potentially harmful for his future development down the line.
The offensive line still needs work and they have some solid players at halfback, but if they don’t have an offensive line, then their talent level doesn’t matter.

At wide receiver they have plenty of talent and depth. Robby Anderson was a pleasant surprise last year, Jermain Kearse was solid, and if Quincy Enunwa is healthy and back to where he was before his neck injury, the Jets will have three quality wide receivers and that’s not even including Terrelle Pryor.
The weapons on the outside are there, they just need a quarterback to get it to them consistently and an offensive line to protect the quarterback.
2018 New York Jets Predictions: Defense
Defensively, the Jets improved in the secondary, that’s for sure. Getting Johnson was a huge boost to this team and will shore up their secondary.
With Claiborne on the other side and assuming Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye continue to improve from last year this will be a rock solid secondary.
Leonard Williams is still a force on the defensive line, but he needs some help. Williams faced constant double teams and as a result only produced two sacks.
Williams is very much an impact player and offenses take time to game plan around him to take him out. Steve McClendon and Henry Anderson will need to take some of the load off.
Williamson will look to shore up the inside linebacker spot and Darron Lee will have to step up. Expectations were high for Lee coming out of Ohio State and he hasn’t lived up to any of those expectations. This is his third year and he’ll have to take a major step this year.
Overall, this is a defense that has some young talent, but there still are holds and needs. Given the right circumstances, this defense has the upside to be a top ten unit, optimistically. Reality, though, this is probably a team that will be middle of the pack, once again.
2018 New York Jets Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The strength of this team is that they are young and the future for them is bright. There is a reason to be optimistic about the Jets if they did end up drafting their quarterback of the future. There is plenty of talent at wide receiver and their secondary is very strong.

They put a lot of capital in their defense, but they still need some help on the defensive line and they will need Lee to step up at linebacker. For the Jets, the thinking is that acquiring Williamson will maybe help Lee’s developmental process.
2018 New York Jets Prediction (Final Record): 6-10
This is obviously still a New York Jets football team that is in a rebuilding process. In one to three years, maybe then this will be a playoff team and given the state of the AFC, maybe it will happen sooner rather than later.
This is a team that has its problems, but there is enough talent that they should win more than five games. Plus, their schedule is more than favorable. The Jets get a pretty soft schedule. One: they do get to play in the AFC East and two: they play in the AFC. That always helps.
They should start the year 2-2 after that they get three straight home games. Now, they are tough, but winnable games against the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, and Minnesota Vikings. One team from the west coast and two dome teams.
The road game against the Chicago Bears could be tricky and the potential for a slip up is higher than you might think. They follow that up against the Dolphins on the road and a home game against the Bills before a much needed bye.
At this point of the season, I would expect the Jets to be at around 4-6, 5-5, realistically. There’s a path to six wins, but that seems like a bit of a stretch.
The good news is that they will have had an extra week to prepare for the Patriots at home. If they are 5-5 at this point, they’ll most definitely be in the playoff hunt in the AFC. A win over the Patriots will be much needed as they have a tough finish.
Road games against the Titans and Bills. Not exactly fun to be playing Buffalo in December. Their final three games are against potentially three of the best offenses in the NFL.
The Texans could be quite the handful if Watson is healthy and still his dynamic self. The Green Bay Packers with Aaron Rodgers and the finale against the Patriots in Foxboro.
A winning season is too much to ask, but improving upon last season’s five wins is more than reasonable. I’ve got the Jets going 6-10 on the year.
